1st Grade Cave Men

Enduring Idea:
Art has always been a part of the human experience. Goal: Students will experience what it would be like to be a cave man painter. Students will understand how cave men painted and what materials they could have used.

Essential Questions: HOQ:

Why did cave people create paintings in caves? What were some of the

challenges that they faced when painting? How did cave people share ideas and tell others about life? Why did the cave men create

paintings in caves? Why were animals so important to the cave people?

Evidence of Common Core Philosophy:

Demonstrate Independence- self-directed learners, effectively seeking out and using resources to assist them. They come to understand other perspectives and culturesstudents can vicariously inhabit worlds and have experiences much different than their own. Outcome: 1.1; 2.1; 3.1; 4.1 Standard 3.0 Creative Expression and Production Students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art. Indicator

Introduction

Students will walk into the room quietly. As they walk in, they will see a virtual video of the caves that we discussed in France on the projector screen from http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/#/en/02_00.xml . We will briefly review last weeks lesson. We will talk about how paintings are created, what tools were used, and what materials could have been used for painting. The teacher will briefly discuss some ground rules for the materials that will be provided. Students will be instructed to paint like a caveman. We w

Procedure

Students will be provided with a variety of tools and materials from the natural world [sticks, pinecones, water, berries, straws (we will pretend that they are bird bones), feathers, charred sticks, red paint (we will pretend that it is blood) etc.] In place of a cave wall, they will be given brown butchers paper. Each table will receive animal shaped sponges as a way to encourage students that might struggle with the representational portion of creating. Students will create their own painting tools and then create cave man paintings on their chunk of the cave wall. There is a lot of freedom with this project so I do expect a mess. Students will be sharing a space, so I do expect arguments over who gets what place. Students will be assigned to a general area, and as a reward, I will be looking for a table that does not argue over space to win Table vs Table. There will be newspaper laid under work area and students will wear aprons. However, I predict significant clean up. Clean up will have to be earlier than most lessons (about 10-15 min depending on the mess!) While students are lined up, or if they clean up with enough time to spare, we will briefly return to the enduring idea through HOQ and the essential questions. If time permits, students will discuss interesting ways that they manipulated the materials provided to create paint and tools. As students are working, I will travel to each table and watch students working. Students will be scored on their use of materials provided to create as a cave person would have created. 0-no effort 1-very little effort and spent time playing around 2- used their time wisely, but did not seem to have a plan for how tools were used 3- was inventive with tools, used time wisely, and was thoughtful to those sharing the same space.
