MAJOR FOOD CROPS OF THE WORLD RICE- is mostly grown in Asia, Europe and Africa.

It grows best in the warm and flooded places. The temperature for growing rice needs to be at least 75 degrees. The yield of rice is about 3.59 tonnes per acre. CASSAVA- is a major source of low cost carbohydrates for populations in the humid tropics. The largest producer of cassava is Brazil, followed by Thailand, Nigeria, Zaire and Indonesia. Cassava is a tropical root crop, requiring at least 8 months of warm weather to produce a crop. It is traditionally grown in a savanna climate, but can be grown in extremes of rainfall. The yield of cassava is about 40 tonnes per acre MAIZE- is mainly grown in Europe and Central America. The average across the area is equivalent to 21 tonnes/hectare or 8.5 tonnes/acre. Maize needs a wet, semi-dry/humid climate to grow. It requires a mean temperature around 20 degrees centigrade and a night temperature above 15 degrees centigrade. It requires considerable warmth from germination to flowering. POTATO- is mainly grown in Europe. Potatoes yield abundantly with little effort, and adapt readily to diverse climates as long as the climate is cool and moist enough to form the starchy tubers. The yield of potato is around 32 tonnes per acre.
