Living In Korea (written by one of our pilots flying for Asiana Airlines): In general I find working in Korea very pleasant. Koreans are very friendly, and most will go out of their way to help you. The culture is very different from my home country (Australia), but with a little effort it is very easy to adapt and respect their way of life. The First Officers English standard varies considerably, but all in all quite good. The "ab-initio" pilots were trained in the United States, and their English is of a high standard. They all work very hard, and although there is a language barrier, most of them are very pleasant to fly with. They all work extremely hard on completing all paperwork, and do all radio work in cruise. The Korean culture in Aviation can be frustrating at times, as they are rigid with rules and regulations. I personally have not had any problems so far, and taken in context, generally the operation runs smoothly. The Hotels we stay in vary, from a very high standard in Sydney, to a lower standard in San Francisco. Most flying is done with double crews, which makes life fairly easy. I have averaged 70 - 75 hours per month so far. Allowances average about $400US to $600US per month, and are paid directly into a US$ account in Korea. I am very happy with the apartment. Running costs are approx $200US per month. Travel from the Mayfield to the Airport is about 45 Minutes, and about the same from most of the apartments. Travel is by a coach, and these coaches run very regularly from many locations. I have no personal experience of having a family here. I believe there are some very good international schools, although they can be reasonably expensive. Cost of living, I have found reasonable. Some Pilots with families have bought vehicles. The price is quite reasonable, with new small cars at around USD15000. Although traffic and parking in Seoul is very bad, the guys who have bought cars are very happy, and very glad they have there own transport. There are many expat areas in Seoul, offering a wide variety of cuisine and night life. Having a "night on the town" is very cheap if you know where to go. The Subway train system is excellent. Trains run constantly, and are very cheap. The Subway system closes around midnight, but taxis are cheap. To make life easier, make sure you have your destination written down before you leave, as most drivers do not speak much English. Although, there is a free interpreter provided by phone if requested. There is plenty of good shopping varying from Market stalls through to high end department stores, the cost is on a par with most cities, for most goods. All in all, whilst a small degree of patience is required at times, life in Korea is good. Building a social network here is crucial to feeling more "at home". If you make an effort to meet other expats through clubs and social gatherings, life becomes far more pleasant. Regional Director
