The Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) is the governing body for community colleges in Washington and Oregon. NWAACC is comprised of 35 member schools from Coos Bay, Oregon, to Spokane, Washington. The association sanctions seven sports for men and eight for women. The NWAACC is divided into four regions that guide the institutions in that particular region. For our student-athletes, community college athletics provide an opportunity to extend their playing career and hone their athletic skills while receiving top quality education. These opportunities will potentially springboard the studentathlete to a four-year university or straight to the ranks of the employed. Over 3700 student-athletes were entered into the eligibility system for the 2011-2012 seasons. There are nine championship events held each year in which over 280 teams compete. NWAACC teams compete in over 1800 contests each year. The NWAACC represents an opportunity to reach over 395,000 community colleges students on our campuses. This year the NWAACC adopted Character, Competition and Community as three core principles for our association. This commitment to develop student-athletes character, embrace competition in sport and more importantly in the classroom, and to invest in our communities is our priority and needs to be the foundation of the NWAACC. The NWAACC incorporated into its major and/or championship events a community project in which all participating teams can collaborate. This endeavor was in no means an attempt to displace or replace the community events that many of the NWAACC teams are currently involved. Community for the NWAACC is the idea of serving our championship communities, a desire for the organization to make an impact as a whole, and provide competing teams the chance to work together and give to others. This project started at the NWAACC Friendlies where close to 40 soccer teams converged at the Starfire complex in Tukwila for two days of games. In November, the sixteen volleyball teams competing in the NWAACC Volleyball Championships hosted by Mt. Hood Community College, presented to the Portland Rescue Mission 80 donated blankets (made by NWAACC volleyball players) and an additional 200 pairs of tennis shoes.

At the Mens and Womens Basketball Championships, NWAACC basketball teams partnered with 2nd Harvest of the TriCities on a food drive. NWAACC basketball teams presented to 2nd Harvest over 2100 cans of food at the NWAACC Basketball banquet. This staggering amount of food will provide approximately 2200 meals for people who are in need.

2 Spring found the NWAACC hosting five NWAACC championship events in which student-athletes donated close to 2000 items to the local communities.

Overall the community efforts of the NWAACC student-athletes were strong and had a significant impact on those in need. NWAACC hopes that it can continue to build on the first year efforts, teaching student-athletes the responsibility and opportunity to give to others while competing hard. Each year at the start of the season, a former NWAACC coach would throw out the following statement to his team, Everyone here likes to play, but the question I really want to see answered is does everyone here love to compete? At the core of the NWAACCs commitment to competition is to challenge student-athletes to answer that question in practice, games, academically, and at championship events. CROSS COUNTRY: Among the student-athletes competing this year in cross country, was a female competitor from Highline Community College who for years was a dental office receptionist. Deciding on a career change after almost 20 years, Jeanna Daninger enrolled in HCC and joined the Highline Cross Country team. Jeanna, a wife, mother, and grandmother, competed in every cross country event that Highline entered. She is scheduled to compete for HCC next year as well and is an example to her teammates that it is never too late to compete and chase your dreams. Everett Community College swept the NWAACC Mens and Womens Cross Country Championships. The college along with the City of Everett hosted the event at the Veterans Golf Course. The Everett Trojans were clearly the dominant cross country teams at the meet.

VOLLEYBALL: Championship tournament highlights included Clackamas being down 0-2 in a match to Spokane rallying to win three straight sets to defeat Spokane. Mt. Hood who earlier in the tournament had lost a tough five set match to Walla Walla had to beat Spokane in order to play in the championship round. In what was a thrilling three set match Mt. Hood proved to be victorious and moved on to the championship match vs. Walla Walla. The Saints from Mt. Hood defeated Walla Walla twice to win the 2012 NWAACC Volleyball Championship.

SOCCER: The mens and womens soccer season kicked off at the annual Friendlies held at the StarFire Complex. With close to 40 NWAACC mens and womens soccer teams competing, the Friendlies gave a rousing start to the 2011 season. Highlights from the season included an exciting mens playoff game between the Olympic Rangers and the Clark College Penguins that went into overtime as night was falling over the Clark campus. In overtime as sideline discussions were going on with administrators regarding the impending darkness, Ciaran Kierney from Olympic scored the game winner. Olympic moved on to win a shootout with Edmonds (lights going out in the shootout!). The Chemeketa Storm with strong team play eventually met up with the Olympic Rangers in the finals. The Storm won the championship game 2-1 to claim the 2011 NWAACC Mens Soccer Championship. Congratulations to Coach Limbard and the Chemeketa Storm.

The Walla Walla Warriors reached the NWAACC Womens Soccer Championship game for the 7th year in a row and for the third year in a row, the Warriors of Walla Walla won the championship game. Kaylie Winston, the NWAACC leading scorer found pay dirt with just seconds remaining in the first half to provide the only goal in the match. BASKETBALL: This year at the NWAACC Championship Tournament saw all 52 games of the tourney webcast with the two championship games broadcast on television. The mens bracket saw top seeds Whatcom Community College and Clark College making surprising early exits. In a memorable second day game, Shoreline Community College defeated Walla Walla Community College 96-94. With .3 left on the clock and having to go the full length of the floor, WWCC coach, Jeff Reinland designed an almost perfect play to tie the game. The length of the court pass and tip was nearly pulled off. In the championship game, Tacoma Community College beat the Chemeketa Storm to give TCC Coach Carl Howell his second NWAACC championship. The Titans were led by the leading scorer in the nation Mark McLaughlin.

The womens championship game was played in front of a packed and boisterous crowd in the bowl of the east end of the arena. Eastern region rivals Yakima Valley College and Columbia Basin College engaged in a classic championship game. The CBC Hawks held on for a 60-59 win. It was an incredible atmosphere for a memorable game. SOFTBALL: Controversy seemed to surround softball in 2011-2012. Concerns about a change in the stat program, a redesigned ball, and the move to seed the NWAACC Championship Tournament were issues that were prominent throughout the season. Seeding the tournament created much discussion, excitement, and bracket gazing as there were quite a few upsets at the Championship Tournament, with the biggest upset being #13 Mt. Hood beating #1 Wenatchee Valley College. Due to rain, the championship games were played two days later than scheduled between #5 Clackamas Community College and #11 Lower Columbia College. Both of these programs have an unparalleled championship history in NWAACC softball. Clackamas won both games each by one run to claim their 9th NWAACC title.

TENNIS: The Spokane mens tennis team won their third title in a row by defeating Skagit Valley College Cardinals 111-104, despite not scoring any team points in the number one singles slot. Riley Newman from Skagit Valley won the number one singles title. On the womens side, Bellevue womens tennis team won their 8th championship in a row. In six of the final nine matches, Spokane and Bellevue faced off with Bellevue winning five of the six match-ups. BCs Anissa BryantSwift defeated Brittany Webster of Spokane to claim the number one singles title and partnered with teammate Amber Portka to win the number one doubles title for the Bellevue Bulldogs. GOLF: Golf saw Bellevue women dominate the championship match as they finished 17 strokes ahead of the Community Colleges of Spokane. Bellevue was led by Katya Case who won by ten strokes. The Community Colleges Spokane mens golf team won their second consecutive championship. They finished 14 strokes ahead of second place Green River Community College. The mens individual champion was Broc Johnson from Green River Community College. TRACK AND FIELD: Track and Field saw Spokane continue its dominance in both mens and womens events. A standout year continued for Spokane distance runner Mikel Elliot who excelled in cross country and continued her dominance in the spring by winning the steeple chase, 1500, 5k, and was a member on the team that won the 4x400 relay. Shayle Dezellem of Spokane was high point winner on the ladies side scoring 43 points. Dezellum took three first place finishes and was the

5 winner of the Heptathlon earlier in the month. Dezellem and Elliot helped lead Spokane women to their 9th consecutive NWAACC title. Emma Bucholz of Clackamas Community College broke the NWAACC javelin record by 12 feet!

On the mens side, the Community Colleges of Spokane won their 8th title in a row. The mens 200 final was an unbelievable race in which Brent Arceneaux (CCS) edged out Branden Helms (Lane) in a photo finish. In the 21 men's events, the Sasquatch recorded 10 first place and 12 second place finishes. Men's high point winners were Brent Arceneaux of Spokane and Elias Gedyon of Lane, both scoring 28 points. Elias Gedyon was named Male Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet following his wins in the 1500 & 5k and placing 2nd in the 800. The male Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet was Joseph Hart of Lane. Hart won the Long Jump, took 3rd in the Triple jump and was 5th in the High jump. BASEBALL: The final NWAACC Championship for 2011-2012 was baseball. This tournament will be remembered for a variety of special accomplishments. Pierce College Raiders won their first ever NWAACC title. With their number one pitcher out with an injury sustained in the first game of the tournament, the Raiders depleted bullpen showed great resolve and execution on way to winning the NWAACC Baseball Championship. It is the first title in school history. Sunday of the tournament saw the coaching career of LCC coach Kelly Smith come to an end as Coach Smith officially retired. The stands were filled with former players, coaches, staff and fans that came to show their appreciation for the legendary Lower Columbia Baseball coach.

Finally the tournament will forever be remembered for LCC leftfielder Derrick Salberg's leaping catch over the left field bullpen fence. With a runner on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Keone Kela of Everett hit a ball that surely would have tied the game. Salbergs incredible catch robbed Kela of a game tying home run as the Red Devils held on for a 4-2 victory in the first round. The catch made national news with its winning of ESPNs play of the month for May and its possible nomination for an ESPY award.

Following are bits of information from that retreat. In looking to develop a master plan for the NWAACC, the members at the retreat sought to answer five questions, Who are we?, Who do we want to be?, What steps do we take to get there?, How do we financially support our efforts?, and How do we manage local autonomy (CCs) and the NWAACC office to insure collective responsibility. Principles that guided the plan and that will help guide the NWAACC in the future are, Student-Athletes First, Giving Student-Athletes the Experience They Deserve, Character, Competition, and Community, Service and Support is Rooted in Excellence, and Give More Than Is Expected. It is imperative that the NWAACC strive to adhere to these principles in all endeavors. The NWAACC seeks to be a regionally based community college athletic association whose focus is on the development of student-athletes through character development, academics, competition and community by providing a first class college experience. Steps or actions to be monitored over the next years will be Character (providing opportunities within competition and outside competition to develop student-athletes character); Academics (review current academic standards, review intersessions offerings, and develop a consistent practice for athletic advising); Fiscal responsibility (move forward to form a 501 (c) ); Support and Resources (the office needs to enhance its current staff to better execute the administration of the conference at a high level); Brand/Image ( the NWAACC needs to develop a marketing strategy that consistently promotes the conference and its student-athletes; the experience must drive the image.)

17 There is no doubt that in 2011-2012, the NWAACC saw the display of character in our student-athletes, the love of competition, and the service to our communities. Though the 2011-2012 season was successful, there is still much to be done, and the best is yet to come!
