For engines running on heavy fuel, it is important to check the oil drained from the piston rod stuffing boxes, as this is normally led back to the crankcase. For this purpose of taking samples, a three-way valve is fitted for each engine cylinder. If the oil is contaminated by sludge from the scavenge air space, the oil from the cylinder in question has to be led to the drain tank until the scraper rings of the piston rod stuffing box have been changed. The drained oil has to be cleaned by a centrifuge before it can be returned to the crankcase. The relevant piping arranged on the engine is shown in fig. 6.05.02: Stuffing box, drain pipes.
