An operating system is the core software that allows a computer to run as an useful device. Operating systems perform a large number of essential tasks. One of the main tasks is to provide an user interface to enable the user to interact with the hardware and software. Anther important task is to manage the memory resources that are available. It also schedules the CPU processing cycles, allocating time to all of the tasks which need to be completed. Another vital task it to control the operation of hardware such as printers, monitors, sound cards, USB sticks etc through special software called device drivers. Other duties include loading and running applications, managing password security, moving data to and from the hard disk, dealing with errors as they occur, and handling the saving, deletion and movement of files on the system. Who would have guessed that this software was responsible for so many critical background operations?
