Rescue Services
Once I was a lonely dog just looking for a home. I had no place to go, no one to call my own. I wandered up and down the streets in rain, in heat, in snow. I ate whatever I could find; I was always on the go. My skin would itch, my feet were sore, and my body ached with pain. No one stopped to give me a pat or gently say my name. I never saw a loving glance; I was always on the run. For people thought that hurting me was really lots of fun. Then one day I heard a voice so gentle, kind and sweet, with arms so soft that reached down to me and took me off my feet. No one again will hurt you, was whispered in my ear. Youll have a home to call your own where you will know no fear. You will be dry, you will be warm, and youll have enough to eat. And rest assured that when you sleep, your dreams will all be sweet. I was afraid, I must admit, Ive lived so long in fear. I cant remember the last time when I let a human come so near. As she tended to my wounds and bathed and brushed my fur, she told me about this rescue group and what it meant to her. She said, We are a circle, a line that never ends. In the center of it, there is you protected by new friends. All around you are the ones that check the pounds, and those who share their homes with you after youve been found. All the other folks are searching near and far, to find the perfect home for you, where you can be a star. She said, There is a family, they are waiting very patiently, and pretty soon well find them, just you wait and see. And then theyll join our circle, theyll help to make it grow, so therell be room for more like you who have no place to go. I waited very patiently. The days, they came and went. Today is the day, I kept on thinking, my family will be sent. Then just when I began to think it wasnt meant to be, there were people standing there gazing down at me. I could tell they felt it, too, for a special dog like you. Now every night I say a prayer to all the Gods that be. Thank you for the life I live and all youve given me. But most of all protect the dogs in the pounds and in the streets. And send a Rescue Person to them to lift them off their feet.

Cemetery/ Crematory
When a Childs Pet Dies
by Debra Moore, Ph.D.
You can help your child cope with the death of a beloved pet by following some simple guidelines:
When a pet is ill or aging, begin to prepare your child. Talk about the day Smokey wont be around anymore. Talk about how to say goodbye. Explain that pets dont live as long as human beings. Compare the expected life expectancies of dogs, cats, and pets such as hamsters. If you decide on euthanasia: Explain that the veterinarian is going to help your pet die gently so it wont have to feel any more pain. Dont say youre putting the animal to sleep. Children take this literally, and may become confused, afraid of sleep, or wait for the animal to return when it wakes up. Get some books from the library about losing a pet. By borrowing them instead of purchasing them, you can also point out that you have to return the book because your child is not alone - there are other children who have lost their pets too. Dont say the animal ran away from home. Again, your child may keep waiting for it to return. Help your child grieve. Allow them to cry, draw pictures, review snapshots of their pet, or have a memorial service. Dont rush their grieving by immediately buying a new animal. It can diminish the special relationship they had with their pet and encourage a pattern of avoiding sorrow by distracting themselves or buying things.

A preferred option to allow your dogs to roam outdoors is to fence in an area for them. The fencing can be wooden, chain link, vinyl, or possibly mesh, depending on the breed of your pet. Drawbacks to this method include cost, and the constant battle to stay ahead of escape artist dogs. In addition, traditional fencing requires constant weed control efforts. The main advantage is the ability to not only confine your own pet, but prevent other animals, children, etc., from wandering into your pets space. Physical fences can be combined with e-fence containment systems.

E- Fencing

Although there are several brands and models available, all of the systems work in much the same manner. A transmitter is mounted on a wall, and a boundary wire is attached. The wire goes out to the boundary of your property, encloses the property, and eventually works back to the transmitter. In other words, the wire makes a continuous loop that begins and ends at the transmitter. Contrary to popular opinion, the wire does not carry any electrical current. Instead, it serves as an antenna and broadcasts a low level radio signal that is received by a special collar that is worn by your dog. The collar then issues a warning tone or vibration, or a low level static correction to alert your dog to the boundary of the yard, depending on what type of system you own. With proper training, the dog learns to retreat back into the safety of your property in response to the collar stimulus. These systems are very effective, and allow your dog to freely roam in a specific area outdoors.

Boarding Your Dog

Choosing the right day care/pet boarding facility is paramount in providing pet owners with peace of mind while on vacation. You wouldnt just drop your child at daycare without touring the facility. It should be the same with your pet. First and foremost take a tour of the facility.

Know the right questions to ask:

Are dogs required to be current on vaccinations and parasite (flea/tick/heartworm) preventative product? Are pets checked for fleas upon drop-off? What veterinary services are available? How often do they clean cages, exercise animals? How do they handle pet emergencies? How often are pets fed? Can the owner bring a pets special food? Are other services available such as grooming, training, bathing, massage?

Walk away from any facility that doesnt:

Ask for your veterinarians name and contact information Ask about your pets vaccinations or parasite control products Have a plan for what to do in case of a pet emergency Smell or look clean

Q-Collar

There are only four reasons to train your dog

Necessity Desire Establish limits and expectations To give your dog a way to earn praise ~ Pat Muller

First, let me tell you that:

I do not believe in bribery. I do not prevent a dog from making mistakes. I instead TEACH the dog exactly what is expected of him and then simply expect the dog to do just that. I praise for EVERY good decision, after every correction and for every appropriate behavior. I never put the dog in a situation that he is not prepared to deal with or where I am not in total control. In that way, the dog cannot fail. I understand, believe, and train with the belief that while training, I cannot take credit for teaching the dog anything new. I am simply translating my commands and expectations so the dog can clearly understand what each word means. The dog knew how to sit, down, stand and walk the day he was born. These are not new. I further understand that the only way a dog can ask a question is to test. Until a dog stops testing, he does not concretely understand the command or expectation. I must NEVER assume that a dog knows what any word or expectation means unless I teach it. A dog is a very consistent animal. A dog desires to please a worthy pack leader. A true pack leader means security, control, safety, comfort, affection, physical needs met, and lots of fun. This is a relationship of mutual respect, not worship.

I have successfully trained thousands of dogs just this way. I was very satisfied and proud of the results I was getting. I used flat collars on every dog and a pinch collar if I needed more correction. The dogs were great and the people Ive trained did well. Oh, there were some who frustrated me, there were some who would not do any corrections and on and on. However, for the most part, I was happy. Then one day a friend of mine asked me if there was a way to train dogs to listen even if the owner would not attend a class. This would be basically - Home Schooling. I got to thinking, could this be done? I believed it could. The big problem would be coming up with effective, but passive control. A control that made the dog responsible for the timing and level of correction needed, instead of the handle.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

The control must: Produce a natural correction that the dog clearly understands. Not be offensive to look at. Be the same no matter who uses it, young or old. Be able to remain on the dog at all times. Work for young puppies, adult dogs, shy dogs and even aggressive dogs. Include a booklet that guides the owner step by step toward success.

This control and the (properly applied) method must produce desired improvement in the behavior of the dog, immediately and permanently. Thus the Q-Collar was invented

A Brief History on Dog Training

With time, dogs have become an important part of human households, where they are seldom treated as working mates. Unlike people of the 18th century, dog owners of today consider their pets as one of their family members and go out of their way to provide the latter with the best of training, diet, grooming and care. William Koehler was perhaps the first dog trainer who had encouraged dog owners to have a better bonding with their dogs. In fact, before that, dogs were considered as working animals, to be kept in the backyard. His training methods helped dog owners to transform these animals into household pets. It is he who introduced the leashes and collars and explained their importance. Soon, dog owners started to realize the pleasure; a simple walk with their dogs can give them or the vitality of playing with these animals. Now it is a beautiful relationship of trust, affection and commitment. A number of training philosophies have been developed based on the idea of dominance (alpha dog where the human is the leader), and on the very idea that your dog perceives you as another dog. Training methods today have no place for harsh punishments and losing temper. Fortunately, for the last few decades, canine psychology and behavior is being given more importance and based on such aspects, dog training is now about loads of patience and positive reinforcements.

If you think dogs cant count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and give him only two ~ Phil Pastorate

Farewell To Fleas

CITRUS REPELLENT: Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a pint jug. Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight. Next day you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle. Spray all over your dog remembering especially behind the ears and around the head generally (careful of eyes), around the base of the tail (once again keep away from delicate bits) and under your dogs armpits.

Pest Control
Guillen Pest Solutions

AROMATHERAPY REPELLENT: Using 10 ml. of Pure Almond Carrier www.bugsbuggingyou.com Oil as your base, add 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 5 drops of 847-951-3433 Cedar wood Essential Oil Shake well and use 1 or 2 drops [of this mixture] spread over the skin at least twice a week to keep the fleas away. A flea collar can be made by rubbing a few drops of one of the following into an ordinary webbing or rope collar or even a doggy bandanna: Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Tea Tree Essential Oil ,Citronella Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil or Geranium Essential Oil. Dont forget to do this weekly. YOUR HOME: Fleas spend most of their time in your furnishings and only hop onto your dog or you for their next meal. Make sure you wash your dogs bedding regularly because no flea ever survived a hot wash cycle. If you add Eucalyptus Essential Oil to the final rinse it will also kill 99% of house dust mites according to research from the University of Sydney, Australia. Vacuum your home very thoroughly and sprinkle a fine layer of ordinary table salt over your upholstery and carpets and leave overnight before vacuuming again to evict your unwelcome guests safely but dont forget to empty your vacuum bag. INTERNAL FLEA REPELLENTS: Garlic may not be your favorite cologne and its not the fleas favorite smell either. When your dog eats garlic, the smell is excreted through the dogs skin making your dog less likely to be the fleas next meal. In case you think you might need to give your dog a breath freshener along with the garlic, my dogs, Mack and Josh, eat garlic every day and I dont find their breath smells from it at all. Brewers yeast tablets will also help to make your dog less attractive to fleas because once again the smell is excreted through the skin. Adding a dessertspoon of natural apple cider vinegar to the water bowl will make the skin more acidic and unpleasant to fleas and ticks. If your dogs dont fancy apple cider vinegar in the water bowl, dilute it 50/50 with water and use in a spray bottle instead of the citrus repellent.

Top 3 Reasons to Spay and Neuter

It helps to reduce companion animal overpopulation. Most countries have a surplus of companion animals and are forced to euthanize or disregard their great suffering. The surplus is in the millions in the United States. Cats are 45 times as prolific, and dogs 15 times as prolific, as humans. They do not need our help to expand their numbers; they need our help to reduce their numbers until there are good homes for them all. Sterilization of your cat or dog will increase his/her chance of a longer and healthier life. Altering your canine friend will increase his life an average of 1 to 3 years, felines, 3 to 5 years. Altered animals have a very low to no risk of mammary gland tumors/ cancer, prostate cancer, perianal tumors, pyometria, and uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers. Sterilizing your cat/dog makes him/her a better pet, reducing his/her urge to roam and decreasing the risk of contracting diseases or getting hurt as they roam. Surveys indicate that as many as 85% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered. Intact male cats living outside have been shown to live on average less than two years. Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome is spread by bites and intact cats fight a great deal more than altered cats.

The Following was Found Posted Very Low on a Refrigerator Door

Dear Dogs and Cats:
The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. The stairway was not designed by null and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesnt help because I fall faster than you can run. I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm. For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, and try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine/feline attendance is not required. The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me FIRST, and then go smell the other dog or cats butt. I cannot stress this enough! Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door: TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS: They live here. You dont. If you dont want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (Thats why they call it fur-niture) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people. To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and dont speak clearly. REMEMBER, DOGS AND CATS ARE BETTER THAN KIDS BECAUSE THEY: Eat less. Hugga Bull Dog Companion Dont ask for money all the time. Are easier to train. www.huggabulldogcompanions.com Normally come when called. Pugs, English (rare colors) & French Bulldogs Never ask to drive the car. hbhawgdawg@aol.com Dont hang out with null. Dont smoke or drink. Dont want to wear your clothes. Park Avenue Boxers Dont have to buy the latest fashions. 608-718-7694 | 608-299-8393 Dont need null dollars for college. Beloit, WI If they get pregnant, you can sell their children. Travel

Pet owners love their pets, so it is only natural if you are a pet owner that you want to take your pet with you when you travel. Pet travel requires advance planning to ensure your pets happiness, as well as your own and that of your fellow travelers. An advance visit to the veterinarian is a good idea before any trip to ensure that all vaccinations are current. Your pets vet can also advise you on any health concerns regarding your destination and suggest medication or treatment if your pet is prone to travel sickness. Since it is easier than you realize to become separated from your pet while traveling, consider implanting an identifying microchip, which is a safe and inexpensive procedure. Your vets office may also be a good source for pet travel supply items; pet stores and online pet suppliers are also good pet travel accessory resources. Car Travel with a Pet When traveling by car with your pet, feed it only lightly before the trip. Use a pet seat belt or pet carrier to restrain your pet. If it is warm, use the air conditioner and schedule frequent, regular stops. When you stop, make sure your pet is on a leash. Air Travel with a Pet Invest in a sturdy pet travel carrier if your pet will be traveling by airplane. If your pet is small enough to travel with you in the airplanes cabin, a soft-sided carrier is a good choice for a pet travel bag. For pet travel in the airplanes cargo hold, a well-ventilated crate is required; ensure that latches are secure, and cover the bottom of the crate with something soft and absorbent, like a blanket or towel. Make the reservation for your pet well in advance, as airlines limit the number of pets booked on each flight. Make sure to check the pet travel regulations with the airline on which you are booked. If your plans include international pet travel, including pet travel in Europe, be sure to check regulations in the country or countries to which you intend to travel. Also, be aware that almost all pet travel airlines charge extra fees for traveling with pets, whether inside the cabin or as cargo.

When looking at taking care of your pet, you want to make sure you have everything in order. One of the major things you need to have in order is picking the right vet for your pet. Choosing the right vet for your pet is a very important thing to do. Most people in their lifetime will get a pet. Choosing a vet will show your pet how much you care. Vets are all over the place, and choosing the right vet can be difficult. Finding the right vet isnt easy; it will take a little bit of time out of your day. Although, that time that you spent looking for a vet will however benefit you and your pet in the long run. One of the first steps you can take is ask your fellow pet owners any recommendations to a good vet. People are usually more than happy to give their opinion about a service they are using. After writing down some recommended vets, it is now time to meet them. You never just want to sign up with a vet you have never met. Make sure you visit with the vet and ask then a bunch of relevant questions concerning your pet. If you follow this simple information you will definitely find the right vet for your pet.
