Hannah Celemen Portfolio Proposal: Coral Reef Entering college has completely and continually pushed me out of my comfort

zone, forcing me to speak out and meet people that would have been the least likely Id approach if we were back in high school. Back in high school there was this constant fear of awkwardness or associating with people that simply did not fit in my kind of people. There were too many cliques and stereotypes that the student body became divided within it self. I would like to pursue the theme of community by using a coral reef as its metaphor. I believe that college is the same as a coral reef because it acts as a safe haven, nourishing and protecting its inhabitant before sending them off into the open sea. The diverse colonies of living animals residing in the coral reefs are the overall student population that are coexisting and sharing the resources offered by the coral reef. To prove the validity of this metaphor I plan to connect this to our reading in Outcasts United and Interstices. I also plan to use my own experience in the clubs and extracurricular activities that I have been involved in all throughout college, where I learned to apply my full potential. I believe that the communities I have become a part of, such as the clubs and the Honors program, has helped me improve and adapt as I transitioned from an awkward high school student to a responsible and confident college student.
