Patriot or Loyalist you decide

5th Grade Social Studies Lesson Doing Podcast Interviews Designed Specifically for Mayo Elementary School in Edgewater, MD Participants:
5th grade teacher library media specialist 5th grade students

Learner Characteristics
Students have no previous experience with Audacity Three students in the class have IEPs for learning disabilities One student has an IEP for Down Syndrome 4 students have 504 Plans for ADHD The class as a whole is very distractible, so constant redirection is needed. They need visual aids, copies for themselves, and step by step instruction for large projects.

Learner Characteristics
The students have been studying American history all year. This lesson will come towards the end of the Revolutionary War unit. The class has limited experience using technology with the exception of PowerPoint and Type 2 Learn

No experience making podcasts

Fits into a larger Social Studies Unit which focuses on the American Revolution Students will be asked to convince their audience to be a Patriot or a Loyalist by taking on one of the two assigned roles.

They will use facts learned from their previous research assignments to support their arguments

1.1.3. - Develop and refine a range of questions to frame the search for new understanding. 1.1.5 - Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. 1.2.3. - Demonstrate creativity by using multiple resources and formats. 2.1.6. - Use the writing process, media and visual literacy, and technology skills to create products that express new understandings. 3.1.4. - Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.

Maryland State Standards

History: (5.C. 1b) Examine the viewpoints of Patriots and Loyalists regarding British colonial policy after the Seven Years War.

Assessment
For this lesson, an exit ticket along with observations will be used to evaluate how students experienced the new technology.

Podcast Interview Project Checklist: Write interview script. Practice interviews. Record interviews with audacity. Edit podcasts to add music and transitions. Publish podcast.

At the beginning of the lesson, students will be given a rubric to ensure that they understand all of the parts of this assignment.
