Chapter 12: An Age of Reform (1820-1860)

ASSIGNMENT: Create a Brochure for a 3-Day American Culture Fair

DIRECTIONS: A brochure is a small colorful pamphlet containing descriptive information about an


upcoming program or event. In the mid 1800s, towns held events that tried to show their citizens that
individuals could reform themselves and that society could be improved. You will create a brochure for a
3-Day American Culture Fair that will introduce the public to the many Reformers of that time period.

IN YOUR BROCHURE:

1. _____ You will tell about at least one Reformer from Section 1: Improving Society, at least two
Abolitionists from Section 2: The Fight Against Slavery, at least two women from Section 3: A Call for
Women’s Rights, and at least two of the following writers: Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne,
Louisa May Alcott, or Henry Longfellow

2._____ For Section1: include a picture of and a short biography about your Reformer; include
important information about what your Reformer attempted to change in society

3. _____ For Section 2: include pictures of and a short biography about your two Abolitionists;
include an excerpt from a speech that each Abolitionist gave during this time period

4. _____ For Section 3: include pictures of and a short biography about your two Women who fought
for Women’s Rights; include a mention of any victories that women won during this time period

5. _____ For Section 4: include pictures of and a list of literary works created by the authors you
mention; include an excerpt of one piece of literature from each author you mention

6. _____ Design of the Brochure: Your brochure will have a cover with a title; will be neat, detailed,
creative and highly imaginative.
