About the PAYONEER

PAYONEER is a proposed payment intermediary service based on

Bangladesh.

It will be basically an Information & Communication Technology

based company devoted to provide innovative cell phone financial
applications to make the daily life easier and comfortable.

It is considering to launch its first operation with a easy, reliable and

convenient payment system by using mobile phone which can be used
to purchase any kind of goods and services in any time from any
where in Bangladesh.

With PAYONEER, consumers don’t need any hard cash, credit card or
cheque for any kind purchase – they don’t even need to sign up or
register any details. All they need is their mobile phone. If a cell
phone user has adequete balance in his cell phone account, he is able
enough to buy.
Background of the study

Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is reshaping our life styles in

every moment. Cellular phone is one of the latest blessings of this ICT. Now a
days, cellular phone has become the part and parcel of our lives.

A cell phone is a small but a very strong device, its utility is now endless-
camera, music, movie, radio, internet....the list is becoming longer and longer.
Besides it core role in communication, it is playing vital roles in many aspects.

Bangladesh also got the magic touch of that, and enjoying the silent revolution
in the information and communication technology. Bangladesh is one of the
fastest growing telecom markets with significant future growth potential.
There are more mobile phones then there are people with bank accounts in
Bangladesh.

Inspired by the above information and by the mobile-to-mobile balance

transfer such as iTop-up, flexiload, eTop-up & easyload and Grameen Phone
utility bill payment system in Chittagong, PAYONEER is now positively
considering to transform and implement this idea as an alternative of cash,
credit card, debit card, and bank cheque for any purchase in Bangladesh.
Scope of the study

The proposed system PAYONEER is a 100% hassle-free, user-friendly

and non pin-based mobile Payment Solution to address the limitations
and bottlenecks created by cash, cheques and credit cards.

It unlocks the power of the mobile phone to make payments, allowing

users to pay for goods and services at anytime, anywhere using only a
mobile phone via SMS (Short Messaging Service). This gives the
freedom to shoppers to buy products without carrying hard
cash/cheque/credit card/debit card/ATM with him, to buy online and to
pay the merchant using his/her mobile phone without being physically
present at the store.

When it comes to online selling, selecting a payment gateway is one of

the major obstacles faced by the merchants in Bangladesh. This
problem has been addressed by PAYONEER, since it allows merchants to
take online order by receiving the payment instantly. So, there will be
no fake order at all.
Scope of the study

PAYONEER will encourage more consumers to shop online. This will

definitely be a great boon to the e-commerce industry in Bangladesh. It will
surely encourage more merchants to adopt online selling as an extra sales
channel which complement perfectly with their offline sales channel to help
them SELL MORE of their goods and services. This feature allows merchants
to accept payment via PAYONEER and process the payment in real time
within clicks!

Various college and university can adopt this payment system to sell
admission form via online. A large number of applicants will be greatly
benefited by it. They don’t need to come physically to the university to
collect the admission form in standing a long cue at both the bank and the
department.

So, PAYONEER has a very lucrative prospect in

Bangladesh.

Management Decision Problem

Should we launch PAYONEER?

Marketing Research Problem

To examine the acceptability and complexity of

this new type of payment system among the
buyers & sellers and the ability & willingness of
cellular companies to provide necessary support
to implement it.
Research Question

•What are the attitudes of respondents towards this payment

system?

•What are the benefits of this system?

•What are the drawbacks of this system?

•What types of product category can be paid by using this system?

•Why people will adopt this method?

•Why people will not adopt this method?

•How can the people be motivated to use PAYONEER.

Objective of the study

1. To understand the willingness of sellers/providers in adopting

this new payment system
2. To determine the interests of buyer in making payment from their
cell phone.
3. To examine the cellular service providers’ approach towards this
mechanism.
4. To determine if there is any correlation between the demographic
characteristics of buyers and the proposed mechanism.
5. To identify if there is any complexity in this payment mechanism.
6. To identify the potential product/service areas in which this
system can be implemented.
7. To find an effective way to transfer the money to the sellers.
Research method

A descriptive research approach had

been used to conduct the study. We
used survey method and secondary
data.
Sources of data

To conduct the proposed study, data has been collected

from two sources:
1. Primary sources
2. Secondary sources
Primary data

In this report, primary information

has been collected through survey
and with a structured questionnaire
by individual personal interview.

Population

In this study, population has been divided in three

broad groups:

1. Responsible officials in cellular companies.

2. Businessmen conducting their businesses in

big shopping malls.

3. Ultimate buyers who shop in urban

shopping malls.
Sample size

Due to the various unavoidable constraints, this

research is based on small samples. For the
convenience of the study, we took samples of 79
persons from three different types of population:

1. 5 persons from cell phone companies.

2. 37 persons as business owner.
3. 37 persons as buyer.
Sample frame

# Six licensed cell phone companies for officials.

# Stores in Bashundhora City and Eastern Plaza

in Dhaka for business owners.

# Buyers in Bashundhora City and Eastern Plaza

in Dhaka.
Sampling procedure

To solve the purpose the study, we have used both

probability and non-probability sampling techniques.
More specifically-

1. Judgment sampling

2. Systematic sampling

3. Convenience sampling.
Sampling procedure (officials)

Judgement sampling technique has been used for

officials who are considered important to deal with
PAYONEER on behalf of their respective cellular
company.
Sampling procedure (business owners)

Systematic sampling technique has been used for business

owners.

We took 16 samples (4 samples from each floor) from Eastern

Plaza and 21 samples (3 samples from each floor) from
Bashundhora City.

We choosed the first store on right side of main entrance of each

floor and then every 10th store from each mall. If that store was
closed/heavy rushed with customers, or the owner was
absent/unwilling to answer, then we selected the immediate next
store.
Sampling procedure (customers)

Convenience sampling technique was used for customers.

We took 16 samples (4 samples from each floor) from Eastern

Plaza and 21 samples (3 samples from each floor) from
Bashundhora City.

We selected the customers who were either in the middle of

his/her shopping, or had completed his/her shopping.

We also selected the customers on the basis of his/her willingness

to spend few minutes with us without any hesitation and hurry to
talk about the matter, and obviously carrying a cell phone with
him.
Major Findings
-Sellers showed fairly positive approach toward the system but they
are somewhat worried/anxious about the reliability and complexity of
the system.

-Buyers are very much interested in this system.

Cellular companies are agreed and very much enthusiastic to

provide necessary supports.

This system would be effective initially in only the modern shopping

malls in the urban areas where educated peoples do their shopping.

Cell companies are willing to handover the money by cheque on a

monthly basis.

Sellers’ intentions are to receive the money in cash on daily basis.

A common question was who will be liable if there is any problem

during the transaction.

Transaction amount ranging from Tk. 100-5000.

Recommendations
The following steps should be taken to effectively run
the PAYONEER:
To increase the awareness of the people of the
PAYONEER through mass media.

To establish the reliability, credibility, and

accountability of PAYONEER.

To be responsive to the user complaints.

To maintain highest standards in service.

To maintain computerized ledger for each and every

transaction.

To deliver the cash, paid via PAYONEER, to the

respective sellers timely with a accurate transaction report.
Limitations of the study

1. Limitation of time to conduct the research.

2. Inadequate field workers.

3. Insufficient expertise of field workers.

4. No previous research works found on the

similar topic.

5. Sample size is very small.

6. Only urban people are interviewed.
