WHY NEED OF HCCI:

1. Enforcement of standards to control pollutants

2.

Need to reduce greenhouse gas, CO2

Combustion achieved by auto ignition of Homogeneous charge (i.e. Fuel economy improvement & reduction in unburnt carbon) is called 1. Active thermo atmospheric combustion (ATAC) 2. Compression ignited homogeneous charge combustion (CIHC) 3. Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) 4. Premixed lean diesel combustion (PREDIC) 5. Active radical combustion (ARC) 6. Optimised kinetic process (OKP) 7. Controlled Auto ignition (CAI) 8. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI)

The main advantage of HCCI application in diesel is to reduce NOx and particulate emission while in SI is to reduction in fuel consumption and ultra-low NOx emission

Kinetics and modelling of NO formation:

Extended Zeldovich mechanism(1st and 2nd is original Zeldovich,3rd added by Lavoie et al)

EGR:
EGR is a NOx emissions reduction technique.it works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. The exhaust gas, added to the fuel, oxygen, and combustion products, increases the specific heat capacity of the cylinder contents, which lowers the adiabatic flame temperature.

In a gasoline engine, this inert exhaust displaces the amount of combustible matter in the cylinder. In a diesel engine, the exhaust gas replaces some of the excess oxygen in the pre-combustion mixture. Because NOx forms primarily when a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperature, the lower combustion chamber temperatures caused by EGR reduces the amount of NOx the combustion generates.
