Teaching Grammar to adult English language learners: Focus on form. By Amber Gallup Rodriguez. This article focuses on grammar instruction on adults second language acquisition, also names some approaches that influence in grammar instruction in language teaching. It gives a brief history about grammar instruction in the United States and says that in this approach there include the shift from explicit to implicit approaches, that called focus on form, the author lists some historical approaches to grammar instruction, such as: Grammar translation approach, it consists to memorize rules in communicative activities. Audio-lingualism approach, it concerns with an implicit orientation to grammar. Cognitive approach emphasize on syntax. Another importance in the article is the influence between focus on form and instruction. Focus on form is the strategies to induce language learners to pay attention to linguistic form (Ellis, 2001). Teachers should apply this method to language learners considering their needs and interests, because, they will able to pay attention to specific mistakes and then have a solution of their mistakes in a spontaneous way. Teacher plays a very important role in the learning of language learner. Also teacher has the power to choose the correct learning methods to teach their students in an ESL or EFL class according with the students needs. What I realized with this article was that these teaching methods can be useful for adults too. I think that teaching methods are good because teachers promote the motivation and improve skills in grammatical system.
