[more] The genetic local search technique (GLS) hybridizes the genetic algorithm (GA) a nd the local search (such as hill climbing) in order to eliminate the disadvanta ges in GA. The power system operating at various conditions is considered as a f inite set of plants. The problem of setting parameters of power system stabilize rs is converted as a simple optimization problem that is solved by a genetic alg orithm and an eigenvalue-based objective function. A single machine infinite bus sy stem and a multi-machine system are considered to test the suggested technique. The optimum placement and tuning of parameters of PSSs are done simultaneously. A PSS tuned using this procedure is robust at different operating conditions and structure changes of the system Integral of time multiplied absolute value of e rror (ITAE) is taken as the performance index of the selected system. Genetic an d Evolutionary algorithm (GEA) toolbox is used along with MATLAB/SIMULINK for si mulation.
