Summary of Ullalim The characters in Ullalim:

The Herois Exploits of Banna

Summary
The story began with the wedding scheduled by Ya-u and Dulaw. They follow betelnut to a feast in Madogayaya, where Dulliyaw of Dulawon falls inlove with Dulaw. He intoxicates Ya-u, and while Ya-u is sleeping, he makes Dulaw chew a slice of his betel nut. He informs her that she has just accepted his marriage proposal by sharing his nut, and he promises to come for her the following night. Dulliyaw does so, but a cock crow awakens the villager. Dulliyaw leaves and kills a man. The villagers pursue him, but he eludes them by climbing a tree. Ya-u calls on the Spanish soldiers of sakbawan to arresr Dulliyaw. The soldiers capture Dulliyaw and Dulaw, and they improsin the two in Sakbawan Three years later, Dulliyaw gives Dulaw another slice of betel nut. But the slice vanishes and reappears in Magobya to Dinanaw, a maiden, after she has bathed in a river. She chews it and becomes pregnant. Three years later, she gives birth to Banna. The friend of Banna tell him that he is the son of the prisoner Dulliyaw, but his mother denies it. Another three years pass; and Banna now a young man, and his companions are transported to Sakbawan. Banna kills Dulaw, but his companionship tells him that Dulliyaw is his father and son return to Magobya riding a beam of light. Banna tells her mother that the man is his father. She accepts Dulliyaws offer of

betel nut, and they rejoice. The next day, the entire village of Magobya is transported to Dulawon where the villagers feast.

The Heroic Exploits of Banna


In the Ballawig version, Banna falls in love with Laggunawa of Manggawa, a maiden, fiance of Dungdungan. When Banna arrives in Manggawa, Laggunawa welcomes him and, spreading a mat, teases him. Armed with a rifle, Dungdungan returns to Manggawa, having been warned by his father of Laggunawas possible infidelity. Banna breaks Dungdungans rifle. Dungdungan, in turn, breaks Bannas cap. Laggunawa steps in to break the fight. She sends each of the men to a kayaw. She will marry the better hunter. Banna slaughters the inhabitants of Bibbila. Dingdungan rests, aware that being the legitimate fiance, he will not lose his claim on Laggunawa whether or not Banna accomplishes his first task. When Banna returns, Dungdungan sends him to kill Uwon, a giant. Banna succeeds. His third task is to kill another giant, Gittam. Having accomplished this, he beheads Banna of Agunawa, a fearsome warrior. Seeing that Banna has succeeded in all his exploits, Dungdungan runs away. Bannas and his mens shout of victory reaches Dulawon. Dulliyaw, Bannas Father, calls for fest, inviting the peoples of Manila, Isabela, and Sandangga. From a distance, however, the revelers hear Dungdungans shouts. Dulliyaw predicts disorder. Later, the women find a spring dried up, another sign of impeding disorder. Banna and his men meet Dungdungan and his follers in a creek. Dungdungan fires his rifle, burning Dulawon. Awingan, Bannas brother, bargains with Dungdungan. In exchange for the bride price that dungdungans father has paid for Laggunawa, Dungdungan gets Bannas cap and gold. Dinayaw, Bannas sister, is married to Dungdungan. Peace is restored. In the Talotok version, Dungdungans fiance is called Dinayaw. Banna is assigned to kill Sindog of Gayyakayya, and Dungdungan is tasked to kill the giant Gittam. While Banna does his work, Dungdungan boasts of his exploits. He tells banna to kill Gittam. When Banna returns, Dungdungan sends him ti behead Kaluya of Ambanuya, a woman. Dungdungan hopes that Banna will not harm a woman. Dungdungan runs away when he realizes that Banna has

accomplished even that, Banna marries Dinayaw, and Dungdungan is invited to the feast. Dungdungan is offered Bagital-yawon, Bannas sister, whom readily accepts.

Ullalim are ballads that narrate the heroic exploits of culture heroes which also emphasize the bravery and pride of the Kalinga people. The ullalim is also a romantic tale in which the hero fights for a maiden of his choice.

Ang nunuk sa bundok ay yumabong at nagkasanga; nang sanga nito'y nabali ay sa akin bumagsak. Sa kinatatayuan ay hindi matanaw ang mga saakyang-dagat dahil ako'y nasa kubling pook, dahil ako'y nasa kubling pook.
