With heavy rainfall in the city on the Thursday morning, the city roads were und er water causing

traffic jams and inconvenience to people who had left for work. Despite giving respite from the heat yet again this month, Mumbaikars have got u sed to the fact that the citys drains would not be able withhold the rainwater. A s well as it claims its first victim this season wherein a 24 year woman died af ter a tree fell on her in Worli. An old tree collapsed on Ashwini Suresh Satpute (24) injuring her grievously. Sh e was rushed to the KEM hospital immediately from there at 11:30 am on Thursday. She was declared dead by the hospital at 3 pm in the evening, informed an offic ial from the disaster management cell. A doctor on duty from KEM said, When she w as bought to the hospital she was injured completely and in a very bad state. We couldnt even investigate or take her for treatment as she succumbed with 15 minu tes of her arrival. She suffered multiple injuries mainly head and back injuries . It rained 20.6 mm in Colaba and 75.4 mm in Santacruz on Thursday and thereby cau sing flooding in suburban area of Mumbai. According to data from the civic body, it rained more in the eastern suburbs than the western suburbs. The MET departm ent had forecast heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours. Due to heavy rainfall on Thursday morning since 1 am to 8 am, 11 places in the eastern suburbs and 19 pla ces in the western suburbs witnessed flooding for which the civic body used 19 w ater pumps in the city, 47 in eastern suburbs and 22 in western suburbs. As well as 26 trees collapsed in the city, 5 in city, 12 in eastern suburbs and 9 in we stern suburbs. We did not receive much complains during the day as it stopped rai ning since 11 am in the morning. But all the facilities were in place, informed an official from the disaster management cell. Surinder Khubchandani of Jay Bharat Society in Khar said, This year we did not wi tness flooding as the drains were cleared after constant follow up with the BMC and railways. The corporator from our area took up the task. Although the drains are not widened enough, the civic body has installed a water pump to pump out t he water saturating in the area. While Kalpana Sen said, There was so much traffic on the Western Express highway, it took me almost three hours to reach town fro m there.
