Amar Jyoti the eternal flame, was lighted in 1981 with an objective of providing comprehensive approach of enabling the disabled through inclusive education, medical care vocational training and job opportunities.
The story of Amar Jyoti has been full of challenges. Lack of awareness, non acceptance and attitudinal barriers, have been the main hindrances.
The concept of Inclusive Education where children with and without disabilities study together at an early age in equal numbers was supposed to be unattainable.
Today it is a part of legislation of our country, Right To Education Act & UNCRPD, The components required are as under: Creation of barrier free environment Training of teachers Appropriate Teaching Learning Material Support of government, civil society and corporate sector Provisions of rehabilitative services These may be Difficult but Possible
The Mantra of success is convergence of resourcesgovernment, media, corporate sector, civil society etc.
With the holistic approach to rehabilitation , vocational training, sports and cultural activities are an essential part of the curriculum
Amar Jyoti is not only implementing and promoting inclusive education but also empowering persons with disability through its initiation of Abilympics in India and abroad. Abilympics is Olympics of Skill competitions to showcase the abilities of the disabled;
By highlighting the skills in Abilympics, job opportunities are created in all sectors
