Water Treatment Facility & Biofiltration Wetlands at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park uses irrigation water from many sources: potable city water, reclaimed water treated on site, well water and recycled rain water. This water is managed via a maze of ponds, reservoirs and large pumping systems to move it around the entire Park and outlying areas. The long term goal is to improve the quality of at least some of this water by passing it through an extensive wetlands area running through the field exhibits. The first step towards this goal has been the installation of the Bio-filtration Wetlands testing and demonstration site. The quality of the water is checked regularly and data collated to assess the efficacy of the plant material to bio-filter the water
