Valli Class/Set: Thales8 Date:01/12/11 Number of pupils: 28 Subject: Spreadsheet Lesson 2 Learning Objectives (WALT): Understand why we use formula and models. Know how to adapt a model by adding charts and graphs. Use models to make predictions.

Time/Period: 3 Scheme of Work:

Room: 26 Level:5

Intended Learning Outcomes (WILF): All must be able to: You can write basic formula. Most must be able to: You can add a chart to a model to improve it. Some must be able to: You can use a model to make predictions and create a model Keywords: Formulae , Sum, Charts, Graphs, Title, Legend, x-axis, y-axis, model, profit, loss, average, income, costs Reference to cross-curriculum issues (Literacy, Numeracy, Citizenship, PSHE, ECM..): Mathematics Entry ( 2.5 mins) Resources Starter (5 mins) : What formula is needed for each of the following sums in column E: 4+10= , 24-2= , 19*2= , 90/22= Y8 SS L2.ppt Spreadsheets worksheet.doc Main ( 45 mins) Explain WILF Objectives Spreadsheets worksheet: Review on your understanding of spreadsheets. Moodle/Thales 8 Tech ICT/Spreadsheets/Lesson 2/ Spreadsheets Worksheet.doc Teacher led discussion: What is a model? Why would we use them? Give an example of who would use a model in society (the world around us) and say why. Why is it sometimes better to use a chart / graph instead of a spreadsheet full of information Prep Check out link to Teach-ICT for help with Excel Demo: by students: Enter formula 1. Add a formula to work out each total item sold in cells D6-D9. Use SUM 2. Add a formula to calculate the total income. 3. Add a formula to calculate total costs. Enter formula 4. Add a formula to calculate profit / loss (HINT: hover over cell D12 for a clue). Create a bar chart 5. Create a column chart based on Item Name and Total Item. Place the graph on a new sheet. Answer the questions. 1. What would happen to the Profit / Loss if the total number of Mars Bars sold went down to 150? Explain why. 2. What would happen to the bar chart if every quantity of each item sold increased by 50. Try to do this, and then explain your answer. 3. Each cost (gas, water etc) all go down by 50. Explain why the total profit changes. 4. Explain, in detail, why Betty could use this model. Describe what she could use it for. 5. Betty would like to know her average INCOME and her average OUTGOING. Add these to the model and explain in the box below how you did it. HINT (=Average(A1:A3))

Plenary ( 5 mins): What did you find easy about todays task? What did you find difficult? What are the details you will edit for a chart? - Title, Legend, X axis title, Y axis title. Exit ( 2.5 mins) Differentiation (related to Learning Outcomes) G & T: Level 6: L6 Chart Exercise Special Education Needs: Other adult support/roles: Homework return, feedback and setting: No homework, feedback given through markbook Assessment including WILF: Markbook in Dropbox Evaluation of the lesson Informal observations made by curriculum mentor[x]
