Removing Hardness
SOFTENING
The two basic methods of softening public water supplies are
chemical precipitation (Lime and Soda ash) and ion exchange.

Other methods can also be used to soften water, such as electrodialysis, distillation, freezing, and reverse osmosis. These processes are complex and expensive .

Lime and Soda Ash

The chemicals normally used are lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2) and soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3). Lime is used to remove the chemicals that cause the carbonate hardness. Soda ash is used to remove the chemicals that cause the noncarbonate hardness. In this process Calcium and Magnesium ions are precipitated by the addition of lime (Ca(OH)2) and soda ash (Na2CO3).
