THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications Session 2 2010 ELEC9712 - High Voltage Systems TEST #1
Allocated time is one hour Attempt all questions

1. Explain skin effect and proximity effect and how current-carrying conductors are designed to minimize these effects. 2. Briefly explain the phenomenon of dielectric heating. Draw an equivalent electrical circuit model, clearly explain what each component in the model represents, and state what quantity is measured as an insulation quality factor. 3. Show the basic equation governing heat transfer in an item of electrical equipment. Explain how this equation is further simplified to determine the continuous thermal rating and transient rating. 4. Define dielectric/breakdown strength and explain how it is frequency dependent. 5. Briefly explain Paschens law. As an insulation material what are the advantages of using SF6 and what are the drawbacks? 6. Briefly explain why a higher operating temperature will result in a shorter effective life. What is the equation describing this relation? 7. Name the main insulation materials used in Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Power Cables, Bushings and Overhead lines, separately. 8. List 5 electrical measurements available for assessing insulating materials. 9. Briefly explain DDF and lightning impulse testing methods.
