    Pyrotechnics use a self-sustaining and controlled exothermic chemical reaction to produce heat, light, gas, smoke and/or sound. Pyrotechnic devices are preferred in rockets and missiles because they provide reliable ignition with minimal components and are not affected by the extreme environments of launch and space. Some important functions performed by pyrotechnic devices in aerospace products include initiating separation events, igniting rocket motors, deploying parachutes or airbags, and cutting or severing connections. Pellet form explosive charges are used in pyrotechnic igniters rather than powder form because they are more stable and reliable for ignition.
