ROMULUS, MY FATHER Examples of people: BELONGING Romulus & Raimonds relationship- Romulus was deeply concerned with ensuring

Raimond grew up to be a good person. This is evident when Romulus says My son is everything to me and when Mottek (Raimonds teacher) says Be careful what you do. If you were to do anything bad or be in any trouble with the police, the disappointment would kill your father. Romulus need for Raimond to be a good person with upstanding morals and ethics, like himself, conveys the love he has for his son. I knew that my father valued truthfulness above most things. Is evidence of Raimond having mutual respect for his father and portrays the healthiness and strength of the father and sons relationship. The words Raimond spoke after his father passed away are some of the most significant in portraying the sense of belonging that his father created for him when he describes his fathers trait of unhesitating acceptance, and describes the way he would never intentionally cause suffering to anyone as well as him being truly a man who would rather suffer evil than do it. The fact that Raimond knew his father so well and held him so close to his heart conveys the connection they shared and the strength of their relationship, thus implying a strong sense of belonging. Romulus relationship with Pantelimon(Hora)- during the course of their lifelong friendship and my father befriended both brothers, but from the beginning his friendship with Hora went deeper are both quotes that emphasise the strength of Hora and Romulus friendship and is evidence of these two friends being connected. Raimond and Horas relationship- Hora played a paternal role for Raymond in times his father could not be around. He felt responsible for Raimond. The simplest things like taking someone to school is what makes up a childs adolescence. Having Hora as a father figure as well as Romulus helped immensely to shape Raimond as person and gave him a strong sense of belonging.

Romulus relationship with Milka- The fact that the couples relationship persevered through such troublesome times and that they complimented each other so well created a significant sense of belonging for Romulus, although he told her it made her look like a monkey, it did not stop her from coming to live in Maryborough is an example of acceptance, despite flaws. When Raimond and Hora were not around, Romulus found himself alone and became a bitter person, that combined with his mental instability continued to torture him A bitterness, which I had never seen in him before, entered my fathers life. The pain of it showed in his eyes. Christine- Christines grave remained without a headstone for years, this is an example of her being marginalised, even after death. I did not know when we would have another chance to remedy what we had so long and shamefully neglected.

Examples of places: BELONGING Raimonds eventual connection with the countryside- Raimond did not always appreciate the outback. Eventually he grew to see the beauty in the countryside and uses imagery when he says The landscape seemed to have a special beauty, disguised until I was ready for it. He goes on It was as though God had taken me to the back of his workshop and shown me something really special. The appreciation and love Raimond discovers for the countryside is what strengthens the connection he has with Frogmore. Associating a place with memories of learning to swim in the lake near the back of his house or the tall grass in which he played with his dog emphasise his sense of belonging in Frogmore. my perception of the landscape changed radically... for my sense of its beauty and everything else fell into place (Descriptive) and in a melancholy beauty that could pierce ones soul, as it did mine. also support Raimonds sense of belonging in a place. Romulus growing to love Frogmore- Romulus, like Raimond, developed love and a conncetion for Frogmore. This is evident when we read at home with the natural as much as the human world

Romulus to psychiatric hospitals- There is no sickness worst than mental sickness and he became dependent on institutional living so that even when he was free to leave, he preferred to stay, and remained there in reception homes in the community for the rest of his life. Vacek- His finding a home with the Gaitas, in Frogmore conveys Vaceks sense of belonging. Vacek also came home- for by then that is what Frogmore was to him.

Examples of places: NOT BELONGING Romulus/Raimond- The listing of different places with strange names in the line Bonegilla... Cairn Curran, Baringhup presents the idea of Raimond and Romulus having difficulty adjusting to new places.

Examples of wider world: BELONGING Romulus- being associated with insanity he tried to hide the signs of insanity as much as he could but it was impossible, for they were always visible and sometimes spectacular. Is an example of Romulus belonging too, although it is not perceived as a optimistic group of people, insanity. Mitru, Christine, Romulus & Vacek- being associated with misfortunate events is an example of them belonging, although it is not something of a good nature, it is something in which they have all experienced trials and tribulations.

Examples of wider world: NOT BELONGING Raimond- I roamed Roamed the streets presents the idea he has no home, people or a place to belong too. Raimond roaming the streets reflects his mothers neglect of him and Mitrus failed atempts to provide for him Christine- Christines attempted suicide conveys her feelings of disconnection with people and the world at large she would fall asleep and then die. The fact that she was known for her promiscuity and lethargy and restlessness also emphasises her disconnection to the world as this symbolises her insecurities, Romulus could not support her in her struggle against her demons strengthens the idea of her feeling marginalised.
