Standard # 4: Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Name of Artifact: What Am I Thinking Now Beginning, Middle, End Date: April 2012 Course: EDUC 224- Introduction to Scientific Inquiry Brief Description: This was a four month assignment used to evaluate personal progress and growth in the process of scientific inquiry. The assignment required us to rate how confident we felt about each category and to reflect on why we thought that way at that point in time. Rationale: To demonstrate my knowledge of Standard #4 Content Knowledge, I have chosen to include my What Am I Thinking Now assignment because it illustrates my understanding that content knowledge is a complex ever evolving body of thinking that is always open to new ideas and innovation.

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations

I am somewhat confident on how to find patterns and connections between multiple possibilities and interpretations. In college I have been in a number of classes where topics and subjects studied in one course appear in another. I need help understanding the layers of meaning to a concept, but I am sure these two ideas are related in some way. Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum

I am not confident to tap into my natural curiosity to drive curriculum. I do have a creative imagination but I have heard how difficult it is to have full control over lessons taught in the classroom. I hope to get more confident in my vision as an educator so that I do not stifle the learning process of my students. Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understanding

I am somewhat confident on how to ask questions throughout an investigative process. I had a law/ critical thinking class in high school that taught me how to come up with questions to ask. I think that I look too much into asking questions and do not keep in mind the facts given to me. I hope to start analytical thinking before I jump into my line of questioning. Being comfortable with not knowing or not having the correct answer

I am not confident with being comfortable of not knowing the correct answer. In school I was always taught to search and find the correct answer. Not knowing for sure rather or not I am right bothers me. I hope that one day I can get a better grasp of just being okay with creating a theory but Im sure this skill will take some time.

I am confident with my awareness that there are layers of meaning to ideas. For the last few weeks I have developed numerous skills for connecting singular ideas to larger concepts. Knowledge is based on a persons interpretation and understanding of it. The more methods one can find to teach a concept the more enhanced learning will be. Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum

I am somewhat confident tapping into my natural curiosity to drive curriculum. The more I investigate scientific questioning I am more interested in exploring other what if questions. I find myself wanting to experiment with other variables to see if the results of my investigation change or stay the same. Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understanding

I am somewhat confident asking questions throughout the investigative process to deepen my understanding of the topic. I have learned that scientific questioning requires more critical thinking and analysis. I need more practice on what questions are important to ask in order to target the main concept. Being comfortable with not knowing or not having the correct answer

I am somewhat confident not knowing if I have attained the correct answer. The scientific inquiry process has helped me to understand that it is not important what one may consider as truth but what one can prove. Evidence can point to many different conclusions depending on facts and perspective. End: Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations I am confident about my developing awareness of different layers of meaning in concepts and ideas. My thoughts have changed as a result of this class because of how we were able to study different theories in order to challenge our pre-existing knowledge. I am more confident and open to researching and finding connections between diverse sources.

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum I am confident tapping into my natural curiosity and questions to drive curriculum. This course has given me the skills on how to arrange my thoughts in an organize format so I can teach my future students.

Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understanding I am confident on how to ask questions throughout an investigative process to deepen my understanding. Re-examine scientific words and phrases that you remember, read, or hear from others. What meaning do these words really have to you?

I am confident re-examining scientific words and phrases. I hope this means I will be gaining an awareness of the layers of meaning for scientific concepts previously learned. I want to gain knowledge on different practices of thought and methods. Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding

I am somewhat confident recording my learning experiences for reflection and further understanding. I have done this practice in previous Education courses. I am not sure if the way I record my experiences will be the same as before and that is why I feel anxiety about it. Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems

I feel confident in my abilities to refer and examine past reflections to newly constructed knowledge to apply new understanding to questions and problems. I know that learning is a growing process that will mold deeper thinking to a higher level and thus give one a greater perspective.

Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding

I am confident about recording my learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding. By being able to re-create documents on a topic one can display to others the amount of knowledge that was gained from the experience. This can help focus on what you know and other things that need to be worked on. Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems

I am confident on how to refer back to reflections and examine what my pre-existing knowledge was and the newly constructed knowledge that I have gained. By being able to reflect on previous experiences one can relate ideas to build on the bigger concept.

Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

Re-examine scientific words and phrases that you remember, read, or hear from others. What meaning do these words really have to you? I am confident re-examining scientific words and phrases that I remember, read, and hear from others. I believe that you have to re-examine these words because they may take on different meanings in changing circumstances.

Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding I am confident recording my learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding. Recording what I have done helps me learn better and also explain to others what I have learned from the process. It helps to also further my understanding because it helps to teach me different ways I can interpret and demonstrate my abilities.

Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems I am confident on how to use reflections to examine what I understood at that time compared to what I have acquired from newly constructed knowledge. Reflections are a great method to appraise self growth and comprehension of knowledge. I believe that the more you reflect on assignments and/or choices the more equipped one is to make changes for the better.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding learning involves the community of learners I am somewhat comfortable engaging in dialogue with others to deepen understanding. I am comfortable speaking up and letting people know what I think but I get irritated with people who do not listen to reason and become open to others opinions. The first day of class I could feel myself getting irritated with my group so I just sat back and let them talk. Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as group

I am confident on how to reflect and make sense of my learning process, but I am only somewhat confident doing the same within a group. I feel as though when you are working in groups people compromise their own thinking to fit into the groups ideal. Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur

I am confident sharing my ideas openly with others. Although I do have the skill and will power to talk to others, I feel I work better independently. People are not always open to others opinions and views. I have a negative standpoint on groups in general. Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding learning involves the community of learners

I am somewhat confident engaging in dialogue with others. I feel like I shut down sometimes when too many ideas are put on the table. I compromise my ideas to go along with the group even if I feel like I am on to something. I will need to work on being more vocal so that my ideas are brainstormed as well. Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as group

I am confident on how reflection can be used to make sense of my learning process and science content. By writing and reviewing my reflections I am able to concentrate on the main ideas behind theories and beliefs of scientific concepts. Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding learning involves the community of learners I am more confident engaging in dialogue with others so that we work together to deepen understanding. I have recognized that learning does involve learning from other people outside of your teacher. I would say that I am more confident working with others but I still have room for growth.

Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as group I am confident with my learning process as it relates to science content in and out of a group. I am better aware of how to transmit experimental concepts into scientific theories in order to support my conclusions.

Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur I am more confident about sharing my ideas openly with others in a group or in class. This has been one notion I have been working on all semester. I can definitely see growth in my ability to do this, but I need to be more consistent about doing it. I do back down still if too many ideas get thrown on the table, but I have gotten better and expressing them initially.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this

I am somewhat confident about learning as a complex multi-dimensional process. There are many questions that can be answered, but those answers can even have questions within them. Learning is like putting together a puzzle that you may never find all the pieces for. Finding some resolution to an I-need-to-know question while aware that there is always more to be learned about the concept

I am somewhat confident finding resolutions to need-to know question. I am afraid that I will just leave it at the first thought and not explore more about the concept. Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time.

I am confident making inferences and checking their viability to my understanding. I do very well thinking critically about subjects and topics before I make a final conclusion. I believe that this skill will continue to develop over time and become easier to manipulate. Developing working explanations that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others

I am not confident about developing working explanations. At this point in time I cannot honestly say I know what it means for sure. I hope that this is something I will learn to do in scientific inquiry. Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this

I am confident about my awareness that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process that will create more questions than what can be answered. After every experiment the last few weeks I had noticed that we take time to narrow our questions to one variable. As we go further into the experiment we find ourselves wondering if we change a variable or product would we receive the same results. Finding some resolution to an I-need-to-know question while aware that there is always more to be learned about the concept

I am confident on how to find some resolution to I-need-to-know questions while keeping awareness that there are more questions going unanswered. The I-need-to-know questions are what are important to the learner in that particular circumstance that may credit or discredit their hypothesis. If you find your results are discrediting your original thoughts that is when a new question is formed to test. Other questions still may follow but one will be at ease knowing one questions is resolved. Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time.

accordance with my understanding at the time. The past few weeks of group work has helped me realize that group work is a positive way to get multiple perspectives of a subject matter. Developing working explanations that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others

I am confident on how to develop working explanations that synthesize what I am thinking, my evidence, and the ideas I get from others. Scientific inquiry requires one to develop a theory based on the evidence in front of you. It is up to the scientist to regulate the variables to find a working explanation based on the materials you come in contact with. End: Explain why your ideas changed or didnt change as a result of this class.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this I am confident of my awareness that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that there will always be more questions than answers. This class has taught me that everything is not always cut and dry. Even when classroom groups where conducting experiments all of us did not always conclude with the same answers. Learning is a process that has no barriers.

Finding some resolution to an I-need-to-know question while aware that there is always more to be learned about the concept I am confident on finding some resolution to I-need-to-know questions. This class has taught me that even after I get solutions to I-need-to know questions there will be more to be learned about that concept. Every solution comes with various reasons of how you might have come to that answers. These ideas should be explored.

Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time. I am confidant making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with my understanding at the time. I know that my interpretations of observations also have the ability to change once research is involved. But I will be confident in making conclusions with what is in front of me at that time.

Developing working explanations that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others.

I am confident on how to develop working explanations based on the evidence that I have been presented with. Scientific inquiry requires you to observe what you have, make claims, and then appraise

your claim by lines of questioning and testing.

EDUC 224 What I am Thinking Now - Expectations Class Expectations:

1. Attend all class sessions. Notify instructor of absence by email and take responsibility to learn about missed experiences from your group. In class credit cannot be made up. Absences may lower your final grade because class activities require participation to earn points. See syllabus.

Beginning: If you dont think you will be able to attend class on time and/or regularly, explain the difficult you foresee so we can discuss it.
My full intention is to be present on time on a regular basis in class. My only problem is my job. School is the most important thing to me but they have continued to go back and forth on their promise to work around my school schedule. I am trying to work this issue out before it becomes a major one. I will not let my problems with my job affect my work in this course.

Middle: Explain your attendance pattern to date and whether you need to modify it for the rest of the class.
My attendance pattern to date has been mostly positive. There were a few bumps in the road but I will work on being present in class regardless of the circumstances that may cause me to be absent. I want to be present everyday so that I and my partner will have plenty of time to work on our final project and receive an A in the course.

End: If you had problems with attendance this semester, explain your situation here.
My attendance pattern to date has not been bad but it has been disappointing to me. Life happened once again this semester but I am proud to say I did not quit. I have been frustrated because I know I am capable of doing better and thats where my frustration lies. 2. Participate fully in all class sessions by working collaboratively with peers, asking questions and taking responsibility for developing your "scientific self".

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

I will participate fully in all class sessions no matter how much group work we do. I need to get to know my classmates because many of them may be future colleagues. I need to learn how to network. Otherwise I will have some difficulty collaborating with other teachers in the future. It is best that I work on this objective now so that I may benefit from those relationships later.

Middle: How are you doing in this regard? Look at the Participation Sheet.
I have been participating somewhat in the class. I have found that in a group I take on more of a supportive role than a leader of the group. I believe the more I work with the same set of people than I will not be as reserved about my opinions. The more that my groups change however I shut down and let the others voice their opinions while I just help conduct the experiment. I know I need to work on my

participation skills within a group and hopefully the next few weeks will be my opportunity to do so.

End: If you had problems with participation this semester, explain your situation here.
My participation this semester has been positive for the most part. I need to practice working with others more. Although I do not mind working with others I still favor working alone. I get annoyed when someone is either too dominant or too needy in a group so I just do my part and leave the others to do what they feel. I know I need to work on this because I will have students at both extremes and I will need to know how to work with them both.

3. Type or word process all major assignments (double space,12 pt font, see guidelines in syllabus) and submit documents as instructed.

Beginning: Explain if this is a problem.

I am aware of the written work guidelines and have no problem completing this task. I will have to look up if the APA guidelines have changed much but otherwise this is a standard that I expect in college.

Middle: How are you doing?

I am doing fine typing all major assignments for this course. I sometimes get overwhelmed being in front of a computer screen for such long periods of time but I know that hand written work is not acceptable. I did struggle a bit with the changes in APA style but I was able to learn the techniques in time before I lost out on easy points.

End: If you had problems with requirement this semester, explain your situation here.
I had no problem typing all my assignments but I do need to review APA guidelines. I have been making small mistakes that have cost me some points this semester. This will be the first and last semester I depend on NoodleTools to help me with citations. I need to learn to do them correctly by myself. 4. Give each assignment enough time to apply your best thinking and writing skills. I assume that what you submit is your best work and grade it accordingly.

Beginning: If you think there will be a problem, let me know here and talk with me.
I will have to manage my time better this semester since I have a larger course load. I must give myself more time to complete assignments to my best ability and find another person who can help me proofread them.

Middle: How are you doing?

I am not doing well managing my time to complete course work ahead of time. I find myself working up into the deadline to complete every assignment because my time is stretched so thin between classes and work. I am getting better at proof-reading documents but I might forget a resource page or cover letter and have to resubmit assignments.

End: If you had problems with doing your best this semester, explain your situation here.
I did have problems giving each assignment its just time this semester. After losing love ones at the start of the year I got behind and have been struggling to keep up ever since. I did have a full course load and full time employment this semester. Given the circumstances I didnt do bad but I wanted to do great and I feel I cheated myself of that. 5. Submit all work on due date. See the syllabus for the late policy and assignment submission instructions.

Beginning: Explain if this is a problem.

This is an objective that I expect. Submitting work on time will not be a problem.

Middle: How are you doing?

I have been able to turn in most assignments by the due date and some have been maybe a day late. This is not acceptable behavior and I wish to correct this problem before graduation. I want to be fully prepared when I get on the university level and succeed at reaching expected deadlines.

End: If you had problems with getting assignments in on time this semester, explain your situation here.
I got assignments in on time but they did not get a lot of effort put into them like I would have liked. I take my time and create quality work but since I got behind this semester I felt like I rushed through many of my assignments in all my courses.

I feel that with lecturing you do not get hands on assignments that can make the material relatable. Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.
My preferences have changed because I can see the value of learning from people other than my instructor. I would like to continue collaborating with classmates so that I may get others interpretations of assignments we are given. Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking The problem with how I like to be graded is that it is not how a teacher should grade their students. Since this is all I am used to I expect it to be done this way. It is hard for me to write things about self-reflection because in school it was only the teachers opinion that counted. I have been working to change this habit but its a difficult one to break.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.
My preferences have changed on how I like to be graded because I feel like there are other ways to examine if a student has learned something. Although one may not fully understand the concept they may understand the process to get to the solution. Grading in different methods gives student the opportunity to showcase what they have learned in a manner that appeals to them.

End: Summarize your thinking about this section related to this course. How might this experience influence you in the future?
I believe this experience has changed much of how I like to be graded. I still want to be graded for my work as an individual and not as a group member. I just feel like I work better by myself and that is how I still prefer to be graded.

I like big discussion as a class but I have stage fright. I have no idea why I feel this way. My public speaking course has been my hardest class to date because I had to consistently get up and speak in front of people. I have no problem talking from my seat but when I know everyones attention is on me, it gives me chills.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.
I have realized that past circumstances have led me to not participate in class. I am learning now that class participation is not a stigma but a stimulus. I believe my past learning environments did not facilitate the type of learning I am doing now and that is where the difficulty lies. I have been in more teacher centered classrooms than kinesthetic ones. I hope to further develop myself so that I will have the confidence to give my students the learning space they need.

End: Summarize your thinking about this section related to this course. How might this experience influence you in the future?
I think I have been the most stubborn in this are when it comes to interacting with other people. I was more vocal and got to know two classmates pretty well but for the most part I stayed to myself as always. I think this course brought me out of my shell a little bit because in past semesters I would go the whole semester and not know anyone. I am adjusting, but still need more time.

In the long run I do not know if quitting will be the best decision to make but I plan to graduate FALL 2012 by any means necessary. I believe that my only problem now is finding balance. I believe I stress a lot because I do not know how to balance school, work and home responsibilities. If I can resolve this disequilibrium I will be good.
