3
What is Density?

Density is how heavy something is for its

size.
Density is mass divided by volume or

d=m/V
where d equals density, m equals mass and
V equals volume
4
An example 

l=10 cm
Mass=100 g

h=5 cm
w=2 cm

V=10x5x2=100 cm3

d=m/V

=> d=100g/100cm3=1g/cm3
5
Let’s look at some density values
Substance Density (g/cm3)

Air 0,0013

Gasoline 0,7

Wood (oak) 0,85

Water (ice) 0,92

Water (liquid) 1,0

Aluminum 2,7

Lead 11,3

6
7
Let’s prove it 
l=10 cm
Let’s start with
object from previous h=5 cm

slide. w=2 cm

Recall that d=1g/cm3

l=5 cm l=5 cm

If we cut it half; h=5 cm h=5 cm

w=2 cm w=2 cm
d=50/(5x2x5)= 1g/cm3

8
Density of Liquids

We know how to measure mass and volume

of a liquid from previous lesson

So we can find density from formula

9
Sink or Float 

Solids can float of sink in a

liquid.

Any solid will sink in a

liquid if it has a density
greater than the density of
liquid!!

10
Density of Gases

By definition, gases have no

specific volume and shape
So, gases can have different
densities, depending on their
conditions
In fact, that is what
distinguishes them from
liquids
