About this ebook

The idyllic setting of a tropical vacation surrounded by beautiful people. What could be better?

Kylie

This vacation seemed to be destined for disaster. Being surrounded by thin, beautiful people made me feel more self-conscious. To say I was dreading this would be an understatement, considering I'm playing the third wheel for my best friend and her fiancé.

And then I see him... A man so captivating, so stunning that I can't keep my eyes off of him.

Well, me and every other woman on board.

Brett

Another week on a boat, playing gigs for gorgeous people. It's like a rock star's dream come true - or not.

The rules or simple: don't fu*k with the guests.

But the moment I saw her, I knew I could never forget her. And now I have to convince her that it's not just a game.

The only problem is that all good things must end, and saying goodbye may be the most challenging thing I have ever done.

    Chapter 1

    Kylie

It wasn’t even noon, but I realized long before that moment that the amount of booze it would take to make this vacation bearable was almost unfathomable. We hadn’t even boarded yet and my best friend, Tori, was already drunk. I figured I’d at least get onto the ship before I started sucking down strawberry daiquiris, but with the way Tori was already drinking, I doubted there would be anything left.

Chin up, buttercup, she said, plopping down next to me. The beer she held in her hand sloshed over, spilling onto the carpeted floor. I had no idea why they let her into the boarding area with an open container, but I didn’t make the rules.

Can you please contain yourself? I asked, trying to control the annoying twitching of my eye.

You look angry, Tori said thoughtfully. She ducked her head down and tilted her face to the side, as though she were looking for a pimple to pop on my chin.

Why? Because I’m not in a straw hat and a rainbow wrap? I asked. Tori rolled her eyes, flipping her blond hair dramatically. She reeked of coconut oil and liquor, a perfect combination for a week-long vacation that screamed, step aside, bitches, a tourist on a cruise!

"I am tropical, she said. We’re going on a cruise. Let’s be tropical."

Okay, so she had a point. I didn’t exactly scream island-ready in a pair of jeans and a tee-shirt. But when you’re my size, three times the mass of your best friend, an itty-bitty rainbow wrap seemed like a mere open door for taunts and teases. I mean, I know that mostly some of that stuff ceased in high school, but it wasn’t out of the question to stumble across the occasional straggler who got a kick out of making fun of fat people.

I hope this boat has air conditioning, Jake Foster, Tori’s fiancé, said. On the other side of me, he tugged restlessly at his shirt collar. A woman in another short skirt passed, and I saw his eyes go straight to her ass. Not that I could blame him—it was a nice ass. Tori, however, rolled her eyes and sighed so loudly I thought she was having a stroke.

"I told you it was going to be hot and to wear shorts instead of those ratty jeans, didn’t I?" she snapped. Sensing danger, I looked around frantically, hoping it wasn’t too late to find a cup of booze that might make this trip more tolerable.

Yes, you did, Jake replied, his voice even. "But like I told you before, my legs burn the worst when I’m out in the sun. I didn’t want to burn before we even boarded the ship, Tori."

"That is what the sunscreen is for." She was now leaning across my lap to give him the stink eye. I knew what was coming, and it wasn’t good. I just hoped that Jake would quit while he was ahead. He usually did, which is why they were good together, but he seemed too riled up today to stop. That was always a fun game to play; whose voice was louder than whose? I, as always, would have to become the mediator.

"If somebody would stop packing the sunscreen in the bottom of her suitcase underneath every article of clothing and every single pair of shoes, then I wouldn’t have that problem, would I?" With his short blond hair sticking up in every direction from the habit of tousling it, and his gray eyes now flashing in a fury, I knew Jake was too irritated to bite his words. It was all up to Tori now to be the bigger person and stop the fight before it escalated.

I laughed aloud at that thought, drawing stares from ahead and behind us.

"And I wouldn’t be packing it in my bag if somebody, a.k.a. Kylie actually packed it in hers, like I asked her to do before she left
