    Kristi Lundrigan sat at her scrubbed oak breakfast table and stared out the window at what was usually a serene view of Montana’s Absaroka Mountain range. But this morning, the scene was anything but calm; it was downright worrisome. A storm overnight had produced lightning, which had kindled a fire in Garnet Canyon, which led straight down Garnet Creek and into the Paradise Valley town of Garnet Gateway… and Kristi’s home.

    Situated as her home was on the eastern edge of town, Kristi had a clear view of the black clouds billowing up from the canyon. The only good news was that the smoke continued to hover above the rocky, tree-lined slopes. The wind had died down as the storm passed, so the smoke and flames weren’t being pushed toward town. Yet.

    Dragging her gaze away from the ominous scene, Kristi forced herself to finish her breakfast. Usually the creamy blend of rolled oats, honey yogurt, and apricot nectar delighted her, but this morning she ate her refrigerated overnight oats mechanically, concerned only with finishing as quickly as possible. She knew she’d need the fuel for what was likely to be an uncomfortable and harrowing day, but she begrudged the time.

    Not being in the habit of watching early morning news shows, she’d been blissfully unaware of the fire as she showered and dressed for the day in her favorite long patchwork skirt and a white cotton shell, but Stitches and Between, her moggy cats, had been uneasy, pacing the bedroom and bumping up against her legs repeatedly as she
