    About Debbie Mumford

    Chapter One

The floor of Edith’s chamber was strewn with fresh, sweet-smelling rushes and a warm fire crackled on the hearth adding the scent of pine and a whiff of smoke to the air. Harold, her hand-fast husband of more than twenty years, sat before the fire wrapped in a soft woolen robe of royal purple. Edith had washed the battle grime from his limbs with her own hands, and now, as he leaned back in the sturdy wooden chair, she combed his long auburn hair.

Once his hair had shone like burnished copper, alive with golden lights, but now those lights had dimmed to pewter and the copper had faded and lost its sheen. Placing the carved wooden comb on a low side table, Edith dipped her fingers in a small silver bowl of mint-infused oil and began rubbing it into Harold’s temples. She knew from long experience that the pressure and motion of her fingers combined with the soothing odor of the mint would ease a headache and help her lord find restful sleep.

How many times had she performed such ministrations for this man? After how many battles
