Tengu, Little Stories and Legends of Japan - kevin tembouret
Preface
The Tengu is a mystical creature that is often regarded as fearsome. Usually living high in the trees, in the mountains and between the clouds, the Tengu is characterized by a long red nose and by an exceptional presence.
But the Tengu is not only that! Although often associated with fire and burning, the Tengu can also be considered a creature of water. In reality, the Tengu goes beyond the archetype of the red demon thanks to a cultural complexity that forms all the richness of the Japanese folklore.
As you read through the different Tengu stories in this book, you will discover a creature that is represented differently in different regions and according to what is being conveyed through it.
From natural disasters to the fatalities of the world, through the representation of the Other (in the philosophical sense of the term), the Tengu is a creature that carries within it various aspects of the cultural and animist identity of Japan.
