About the Author

Introduction

If all processed products are removed from the store the store shelves would be empty. Yes, this is how much processed food we consume. You might think that you have a healthy diet but still, you can eat lots of non-healthy processed products without even knowing it. So how can you change this? You can consider switching to a plant-based diet.

A plant-based diet means eating foods that are mostly or entirely made from plants, and it helps you meet your nutritional needs by consuming foods in which none or close to none of the ingredients come from animals. A plant-based diet also focuses on healthful whole foods, rather than processed foods.

Scientific research provides evidence that switching to plant-based diets helps control, reduce and even reverse various chronic diseases.

There is a common misconception that vegetarian and vegan diets might be lacking sufficient amount of protein. However, many dietitians and scientists say that vegetarian or vegan diets have more than enough nutrients in them if planned well. Nevertheless, all foods are different in their protein values, some foods contain more protein, and there are those that contain less. High protein plant-based products are:

-  Legumes

-  Nutritional yeast

-  Seitan

-  Tofu

-  Lentils

-  Tempeh

-  Hemp seeds

-  Spelt flour

-  Quinoa

-  Oats

-  Wild rice

-  Chia seeds

There are many benefits of eating plant-based food instead of processed. The main advantages are:

-  Eating plant-based food helps you maintain a healthy weight.

-  Fiber from plant-based products lowers cholesterol levels, improves the immune system, and reduces inflammation.

-  Reduces risk of heart diseases, diabetes, and some mental illnesses.

The main idea of eating more plant-based products is to consume the products the way they were produced by nature, or as close to it as possible. This means choosing foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, minimally processed, not packaged, or originating from a factory. It also implies consuming lots of wholes, real foods that provide maximal nutritional benefits, avoiding processed foods, and creating a healthy, conscientious approach to what foods you eat. Cooking at home and finding good healthy ingredients is encouraged, as well as selecting ethical and sustainable sources of food.

In addition, if you want to start eating healthy, watching the amount of consumed salt, sugar and fats is very important. Consuming too much-added salt and sugar is linked to varying health issues: obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, heart disease, and cancer, among other health problems. That is the reason it is important to cut back or avoid eating added salt and sugar altogether.

So if you want to eat healthily, you should consume foods in their natural, minimum salted, and/or sweetened flavoring, and learn to appreciate the real taste of foods.
