Descrizione

By definition, a victim is a person who has had a wrong done to them. The action was outside of their control. They are powerless to help themselves. Being a victim may leave you in a state of hopelessness, confusion and vulnerability. Without the tools to overcome these feelings, a person in this state will take on a “victim mentality” as a means to attempt to either withdraw from life, or create a false defense against further hurt and disappointment. Unfortunately, it usually leads to more hurt, isolation, and victimization. Sometimes the wrongs against us are very real.

Jesus has the final word on all things. When we live as an overcomer, it begins by trusting in Jesus and in His love for us. That has to be our foundation. This does not mean that it is easy to walk in faith and walk in love, but it is what we have been called to do, and God through His Spirit in us helps us every step of the way.

Introduction

What does it mean to have a victim mentality?

Can you recognize it when you see it?

Everyone sees things from different angles and processes things differently. This is part of what makes us unique.

Psalm 139:13-14 (esv)

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

We have been fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God.¹ Our unique design allows each of us to see things differently, from our unique perspective.

Not only do we have unique perspectives as individuals, but we also have multifaceted qualities that manifest themselves in a number of ways, just like our Creator.

For example, we know that God is both the Lion and the Lamb. He is also the Redeemer and Sanctifier. Look at His redemptive names in the Old Testament:

Jehovah-Rapha, The Lord our Healer (Exodus 15:26; Isaiah 1:5-6; Jeremiah 17:9; Luke 5:31)

Jehovah-Nissi, the Lord our Banner [or Refuge] – (Exodus 17:8-15; Psalm 20:5)

Jehovah-Shammah, the Lord (who) is Present (Ezekiel 48:35; Exodus 33:14-15; 1 Chronicles 16:27; Psalm 16:11; 97:5)

Jehovah-Tsidkenu, the Lord our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6; Psalm 11:7; 89:14; 1 Corinthians 1:30)

Jehovah-Shalom, the Lord our Peace (Judges 6:24; Isaiah 9:6; Luke 1:78-79)

Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord our Provider (Genesis 22:8-14; John 1:29; Galatians 3:8; 1 Corinthians 2:7)

Jehovah-Ra’ah, the Lord our Shepherd (Genesis 48:15; Psalm 23:1; 80:1; Isaiah 40:10-11; 1 Peter 2:25)

Each one of these names actually has a powerful meaning behind it as to how God reveals His power, provision, protection, and His presence. This is just a sample of the many ways He reveals Himself to us.

All of these descriptions tell us who God is to us—His character and the role He plays in our lives. Because God is perfect in all His ways, when God introduces Himself as Provider, He is not saying He is one of many providers in our life; He in fact is THE Provider; He IS Provision. He is THE Healer because He IS Healing. He IS Righteousness and Peace in perfection.

Jesus is completely human, and He is also completely God, so He is perfect as a human and He is perfect as God. Jesus is the perfect Lamb, the perfect Healer, and the perfect Lover of our souls.

1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (nasb)

But it is due to Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

God is perfect in how He manifests Himself to us. God is indeed multifaceted, but this does not make Him fragmented. God is whole and complete in and of Himself, and all of the different descriptions or characteristics of God complement and affirm His completeness. This is a wonderful mystery about God because nothing can be added to Him or taken away from Him to make Him less than who He is.

This is very different from how we, as humans, function. As humans, we have some of those God-given traits that show up in how we perceive and process things. We are also multifaceted in how we manifest our strengths, our weaknesses, and our giftings. However, we have to remember that we are not perfected in our processing. There is a filter in our processing and perception that we draw everything through that is not always perfectly clean of debris.

If you wear glasses, this will make a lot of sense to you. You can start your day with a clean pair of glasses, but as the day goes on, the glasses become smudged with fingerprints, scratches, dust particles and dead skin cells—all of which cloud the glass and make the experience less than perfect. It can distort your view. If the glasses are dirty enough, you will not be able to read or see where you are going.

This is how the human experience can impact our view of what we encounter in our relationships and daily experiences. We are seeing the world through a filter of dirty glasses.

We have to acknowledge this as a weakness that we have as we process things. We have to understand that at times our perception of what is happening around us may not be as accurate as we believe. Be humble, and let God help us to process events or situations from His perspective so we are not locked in by our limited viewpoint.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (nkjv)

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Each facet of our make-up
