Emotional Well-Being
Many people with long histories of meditation and yoga still find that negative emotions—depression, frustration, loneliness, anxiety, worry, and lack of contentment—keep them from enjoying life to the fullest. Even after years of meditation, a change in health, a relationship, or a job can trigger negative emotions.
Having positive emotions—feelings of contentment, inner happiness, love, and zeal for life—is essential for living a spiritually fulfilled life. All of life’s activities are based on our emotions. Our actions and behavior toward others depend largely on how we feel. Daily meditation plays an important part in relieving anxiety and fear. Meditation is like the water a plant needs to grow. However, if the soil is not fertile and has rocks that are hindering the plant’s growth, applying the proper fertilizers and irrigation techniques can help it grow faster. Negative emotional patterns are like rocks in the soil that hinder spiritual development. We need the proper tools to remove the blocks so we can grow.
An emotionally fit individual is happy, content, loving, energetic, and excited about life and the future. An emotionally fit individual has purpose, is focused, and is passionate about living. An emotionally fit individual sees problems as challenges and embraces them with enthusiasm. An emotionally fit individual maintains equanimity in all situations.
The following exercise will help you determine your current emotional state. When doing this exercise, do not think about the answer. Just write down what first comes to mind (a, b, c, d, or e).
1. What people think about me affects my well-being.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
2. I get upset and thrown off track when unexpected situations and circumstances arise.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
3. I tend to hold grudges.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
4. When faced with challenging or difficult situations, I focus on the positive, the possible, and potential good rather than on the negative and potential bad.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
5. I suffer from self-doubt. I don’t have a clear sense of direction in my life.
(a) no sense of direction (b) very little sense of direction
(c) some sense of direction (d) very clear sense of direction
6. I wake up each day happy to be alive and looking forward to the day ahead.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) always
7. I need to be constantly active or have people around to feel good.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
8. I am afraid to trust.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
9. I believe in myself and my ability to accomplish my goals.
(a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) all the time
10. I get frustrated with people and tend to lose my temper.
a) never (b) rarely (c) sometimes (d) frequently (e) all the time
When you are finished, go over the questions. Based on your initial answers, examine which areas need to be improved.
