I'm Mike Harmon and I have been formulating skin care products for 30 years. I have formulated for private clients, boutique beauty salons and luxury hotel spas. I have been teaching courses showing people how to formulate skin care ranges for 15 years. All that experience is now accessible to you too.

In this book, you will learn more about all of the ingredients that are used so that you can start your own incredible journey to making your own skincare cosmetics that are natural and really effective - all of them incorporating cannabis.

Why cannabis? You may have heard of Cannabis Sativa as a herb to smoke or ingest in foods - more latterly, CBD has appeared on the market with a wide range of therapeutic benefits, but did you know that cannabis can be applied to the skin in different forms? It gives an extremely effective and elegant way to get the therapeutic benefits into your body.

When you are starting out on your skincare journey, it's important to learn good habits right from the start so that they become second nature: keep your working area clean, tick off ingredients as you use them and be sure to use the correct amounts. This all makes a difference when it comes to using preservatives. Don't forget to label and date your products.

Thanks to my experience of teaching cosmetology courses and formulating for successful brands, I can make it easy for you to follow how to do this for yourself.

I have done the hard work for you and I will lead you through making your own;

  • Happy Hand Cream
  • Floaty Foot Cream
  • Mind Blowing Massage Cream
  • Blissed Out Body Butter
  • Cool Conditioner Bar
  • Lip Smacking Lip Balm
  • Rear Enders
  • Magical Massage Candle
  • Bootylicious Body Lotion
  • Sore Joints Jelly
  • Spray That Again Body Oil
  • Stir Crazy Gel

These are the same high quality spa products that I specialize in formulating, and they make a good spa experience - even without the cannabis. However, with the added benefits of cannabis, they are taken to another level, enabling your body to utilize the antioxidants, terpenes and cannabinoids that naturally occur in the plant. Maybe one of you will be inspired to open the first cannabis spa, who knows? If you do, don't forget to send me an invitation!

This book will also introduce you to some of the less common oils that you may never have heard of before, like Meadowfoam Seed Oil. These are just a couple of insider tips that I will share with you.

This book and blog website are the result of a long but productive Covid lockdown in my adopted country of Spain and a lot (I mean a LOT) of practice, patience and research. Finally, here it is, all ready for you to lose yourself in and enjoy.

There is a list of contacts to ensure you get the correct specific ingredients using several suppliers who are able to guarantee the consistent quality and availability of their goods. Some of them have allowed me to give you discount codes to save money as well.

Be sure to follow my blog so you can read more about the ingredients you will be using and links to suppliers.

So come on, let's start making Off Your Face Creams!

Off Your Face Creams - Mike Harmon

2021.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED

Let’s start with cannabis. There are many forms of cannabis and many names for it. In this book, the form of cannabis I am using is the dried plant buds. Whether you call it marijuana, mary jane, hash, grass, herb or weed, that is what is being used.

––––––––

The plant has been grown and cut, the leaves have been trimmed off, and the buds have been dried. It is the dried buds that I am using to infuse into oils in this book and, generally speaking, it is buds rather than leaves that are used when making cannabis infused oils. You can also use dried leaves, dried trimmings and so on, but these parts are less potent. Whichever parts you use, the commonality is that they are dried and then infused in oils, except for the chapter on alcohol tinctures where buds are infused into either alcohol or MCT oil.

––––––––

I have not produced any of the formulations in this book using CBD oil, resin or wax. They could undoubtedly be used, but the formulations may need altering to keep them stable.

––––––––

There may be times when you are waiting for your harvest to dry or for your dispensary to get a certain variety in stock, meaning that you may not have access to the cannabis you want. It may also be that possession or use of cannabis is illegal where you live. It is, of course, perfectly possible to make these recipes without infusing the cannabis herb (except for the Rear Enders and Sore Joint Jelly, as they both really need to have the infused oil in to have any effect). Just keep the oil component of the formulation the same, without having infused any cannabis.

––––––––

The natural vegetable oils I have selected all have highly beneficial properties for your skin, as do the essential oils. This way, you can still enjoy making your own skincare products that anyone can use. Let’s now continue with the oils, because they are what we will be infusing our cannabis in.

––––––––

Rice Bran Oil

Taken from the husk of brown rice, this amazing oil is very rich in natural antioxidants, tocopherols and tocotrienols (Vitamin E). Having a good shelf life, this exceptionally heat tolerant oil can withstand the temperature needed for cannabis infusing, while still retaining its superb nutritive attributes for your skin.

Rice Bran oil softens and regenerates the skin while locking in moisture and keeping the skin very supple. In my hand cream formula, the oil works to soften ragged cuticles and to encourage healthy nail growth. An ingredient of this oil is the powerful essential fatty acid called Eicosenoic Acid, which helps to balance the overproduction of sebum in your skin so that it won’t be so oily. We use it in the Happy Hand Cream and Sore Joint Jelly.

Olive Oil

This oil contains naturally occurring Squalane, which enables the cream to glide beautifully on the skin and is a fabulous alternative to using synthetic silicones. Pressed from fresh green olives, Olive Oil is mostly Oleic Acid, also known as Omega 9. As naturopaths know, Omega 9 is a great way to alleviate joint inflammation, stiffness and pain. Because the Omega 9 ratio is so high, even small amounts used in our products would be of benefit. We use it in the Floaty Foot Cream and Rear Enders.

––––––––

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

So called because when fields of plants are in full bloom, the creamy white flowers look like the foam on sea crashing onto rocks. It’s another oil that is rich in Omega 9, which would normally make it feel heavy, but not in this case. It sinks into the skin in a reasonably quick time while still allowing enough lubrication to massage, knead the muscles or apply to a tender area. Once absorbed, this oil gives a great skin feel with no greasiness.

It locks moisture into the skin and, if you are prone to problem skin, it really helps to unblock the pores. It has good antioxidants, which not only make it very stable for cannabis infusions but also tackle free radical damage, reducing the number of fine lines and wrinkles in your skin. We use it in the Mind Blowing Massage Cream.

Marula Oil

This oil sinks into the skin fast and is rich in Omega 9 essential fatty acid. It conditions dry and flaky skin, leaving it very soft and flexible with no greasy after-feel. It contains an impressive amount of tocopherols and other antioxidants and, trust me, your skin will just love it, especially when it is infused with your favorite cannabis. We use it in the Cool Conditioner Bar, Blissed Out Body Butter and Magical Massage Candle.

Tigernut Oil

This oil is pressed from a root tuber that grows in the soil, so don’t worry if you have nut allergies because, despite its name, it is not a nut. It’s rich in phytosterols, which are plant sterols that encourage skin cells to increase faster. That means your skin refreshes and renews more quickly, making it brighter and fresher
