About this ebook

Do you want to learn about George Washington but don’t have the time or patience to read a thick book? Then this is the short and concise book for you!!

George Washington, the revolutionary war hero, and first president of the United States has risen to the level of an American legend. This one-dimensional view of the “founding father” turns out to be short sighted. For this complex man of the soil from Virginia, though of limited formal education, would change the very destiny of nations. Few knew Washington as well as did his Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, who wrote of Washington long after his death, “He was indeed, in every sense of the words, a wise, a good and a great man..” Just one of his many achievements would make him a notable American, but his accomplishments were many:
-- Officer in the Virginia Militia during the opening battles of the French and Indian War.
-- Top patriot leader in the Virginia House of Burgesses.
-- Delegate from Virginia to the First Continental Congress.
-- Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
-- President of the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
-- First President of the United States. During his two terms he led the infant republic to form a stable federal government that has lasted over two centuries.

    Introduction

From the start of the eighteenth-century the French had built alliances with Indian tribes west of the Appalachian Mountains from New Orleans in the south to Quebec in the north. New France was sparsely populated with mostly French fur traders and a few French forts situated along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. While the French had laid claim to much of the heartland of North America, the Spanish held Florida and Mexico, with the British establishing colonies from Georgia to Maine along the Eastern Seaboard.

Reverberations from the sporadic wars in Europe between France, Spain, and Britain were felt in the settlements of North America. In 1754, international tensions erupted in America’s Ohio Valley—land variously claimed by Virginians, Pennsylvanians, the French, and more than a dozen Indian tribes. It was into this volatile mix that a tall, muscular, and ambitious young Virginian named George Washington made his debut on the world stage.

The man who is called the Father of America, George Washington, led an amazing life by any standard. Even if he had not become the first president of the United States, he would still rank as one of the most important people in the history the United States. Washington was born in the British colony of Virginia on a plantation in 1732. Little is known of his youth; however, we do know he received a minimal education and later learned the profession of a surveyor, which was a valuable skill in the expanding frontier of Virginia. A tall and muscular young man, Washington was a natural military leader in the Virginia militia, becoming a lieutenant colonel in the voluntary Virginia militia and participating
