    Chapter One: Introduction

Thank you for picking up the 3.5 edition of Hosting Beach Wrestling Events. If you haven’t heard of this emerging sport, this is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the oldest version of mankind’s oldest sport. Beach wrestling was introduced by the international wrestling federation (United World Wrestling) in 2004, resurrecting the rules of wrestling prior to use of wrestling mats in the very early 1900’s. The rules have been slightly adjusted since then, with a major modification being introduced in 2015 by the newly created international beach wrestling committee.

New to the half-revised 3.5 edition is the inclusion of sand-modified belt wrestling, and updates to scrambling and back exposure points to better reflect the current state of beach wrestling tournaments as of 2018.

If you already know about this great sport, and would like to host a few beach wrestling tournaments, this is the book for you. This version of Hosting Beach Wrestling Events includes the updated international rules of beach wrestling and offers plenty of strategies on ways to improve your tournament, promote the contest, and raise money for your athletic club or fundraising effort. This might be an easy read for many of you, as this book was written so individuals and groups without any previous wrestling experience can successfully host a beach wrestling event.

While this sport is an official international form of wrestling, I did write this book with a United States audience in mind. I am fully aware that beach wrestling has helped resurrect the sport of wrestling in many countries and I support the major push occurring around the globe to get this style into the Olympic Games. The information contained within this book can help anyone organize a beach wrestling event, anywhere in the world. Please keep in mind that certain pieces of information only apply to the United States, such as mentioning the major U.S. wrestling leagues.

I have been involved in wrestling for over 25 years, and hooked on this style ever since my first beach wrestling experience in 2007. What’s not to like? It’s easier to get friends and family members watch me wrestle outdoors, with the beach as an added incentive. This style is easy to understand, which helps lure more spectators and athletes to our sport. It also serves as a great transitional style for American wrestlers who would love to try international wrestling but only have experience in scholastic wrestling. Beach wrestling is an inexpensive way to offer more recreational activities to your local community, for men and women of all ages.

During the past nine years, I have been involved in beach wrestling as an athlete (3x All American, member of the 2011 U.S. Team), a coach (for the Silver Ravens Beach Wrestling Club), a referee (2011 AAU World Championships, 2015 Michigan State Championships), and a tournament director (2011 AAU World Championships). I’m thrilled to share my experiences with you. I’ve learned more about this sport since writing the second edition of Hosting Beach Wrestling Events, and I’m optimistic that I’ll learn more about this amazing style as the years go by. The biggest reason I’ve been involved with wrestling for as long as I have is due to the fact that I have learned something new about wrestling, each and every day. I hope you have that same approach, and not only in wrestling; strive to learn something new in life every day.

Thank you, and I wish you the very best of luck with your beach wrestling tournament.

    Chapter Two: Rules

These are the rules of beach wrestling, and they have changed since this style was first introduced in 2004. These are how the rules are applied as of the summer, 2018. There may be more changes in the future, as UWW has created an international beach wrestling committee for the purpose of improving this style and to potentially get this style of wrestling included in the Olympic Games.

These rules are meant to be simple to understand. One purpose of beach wrestling is to serve as an introductory style to wrestling, and when you keep the rules simple to understand, it will encourage new athletes. Active wrestlers are not the only athletes who participate in beach wrestling. Martial artists, football players, and retired wrestlers routinely sign-up for the fun in the sun, but athletes from nearly every sport have given beach wrestling a try. By keeping the rules simple, it’s easier for spectators to follow the action. And our sport can use a style that is spectator friendly.

Please refrain from altering the rules. It only leads to more complexities that will discourage non-active wrestlers from participating. It’s true that wrestlers love a challenge, and there is enough of a challenge by wrestling in the sand. Competing in the sand is more difficult than wrestling on a wrestling
