Disclaimer:
1) My goal for this book is to provide an English language guide for some of the hiking trails, huts and peaks that surround Mittenwald. I’ve looked all over Mittenwald and through the bookstores in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Munich and haven’t found an English language-hiking guide to this area. A couple of months ago, I gathered up the 4 notebooks worth of data that I’ve recorded during my hikes and climbs and decided to put them together in single book. But I’m not a writer. All those years of not paying attention in English class will be on full display in the following pages. If you are annoyed by run on sentences and comma splices, this book might not be for you.
2) Safety - The mountains can be dangerous. This book isn’t a guide for how to identify and minimize the risk of hiking and climbing in the mountains. Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, by The Mountaineers, is a great book outlining risk, hazards and mountaineering technique. When you head up into the mountains, you are assuming the risks that come with that environment. The best ways to handle these risks are to be prepared, know your skill level, and use good judgment.
3) Weather - The weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Take note of the weather and the forecast before you head out. In Mittenwald, the Wetterstein or the Karwendel can hide approaching weather systems. Bring gear appropriate for the conditions and also be prepared for those conditions to change.
4) Maps - If you plan on hiking or climbing, I would recommend purchasing a full topographic map of the region. The people at Kompass Maps make great topo maps for this area and all of the Alps. They can be found in the Mittenwald train station, local sports stores, and the area’s grocery stores and will make your hiking quite a bit more enjoyable. It’s good to know where you are and where you’re going.
5) Hiking times and hut schedules - I’ve walked every one of the routes listed in this book and I’ve done my best to estimate how long each hike will take. I listed the hiking times as one way: from the town or trailhead, to the hut or destination. Obviously, your time may differ depending upon how fast or slow you hike. Most huts are usually open from mid-May to the end of September. Some like the Ederkanzel Hütte stay open most of the year. Most of these huts have information on their schedules on the internet. If you’re in Mittenwald in the off-season, you may want to check in advance before heading up to a hut. Mittenwald also has a visitor’s tourist office that can give information on the different huts. It is located just up the street from the train station. Walk up Bahnhofstrasse and take a right on Dammkarstrasse. (3 minute walk.) It’s well marked and they are a very helpful group.

Glossary
Introduction:
The Karwendel - If you asked a 7-year-old child to draw you a picture of a mountain, they’ll draw you a picture of the Karwendel. The mountain rises up sharply from the Isar River. Its lower slopes hold a beautiful forest that gives way to steep limestone walls and faces. It has numerous gullies, ravines, rockslides, spires, ridges, and a classic profile. It reminds me of Mount Stuart
