Dedication
To anyone who has ever been afraid…and enjoyed it.
This book is for you.
AN EXQUISITE FACE
An exquisite face
An exquisite time
An exquisite place
For an exquisite crime
Hiding in the shadows as the family goes to bed
Waiting for the moment when the silent house is dead
Aching from the stillness, I lean into the light
Moving slowly forward until he is in sight
Sleeping under sheets, making drifts of linen snow
The moonlight fills the bedroom with a cool but amber glow
Creeping across the hardwood floor as each board softly creaks
I hear blood pounding in my ears, as my helpless victim sleeps
Closer now, I watch his ebbing chest and flowing breath
There's a darting dream behind his eyes, not suspecting death
I draw in close to see his face, his soft and youthful skin
Creates a look of innocence that hides the wickedness within
This man-child in his tender sleep may not know what he has taken
The broken heart he left behind, the love he has forsaken
As he sighs in quiet peace, I soften and I pause
To think of his parents sorrow, of their emptiness and loss
But rage returns and slaps me hard before I shed a tear
I suddenly remember all the pain that brought me here
The flashing of the silver blade and then the slashing, then the red
The crimson fountain splashing, his lips are speaking words unsaid
His eyes are now wide open, staring punches at my face
His windpipe now is severed as his legs begin to chase
As though his feet are on the ground and he can run for the door
But he is still in bed with his life puddling on the floor
The gaping wound still sputtering as his body fights then twitches
As he finally succumbs to death, my course of action switches
