About this ebook

Newly revised for 2019. This fine book shines a spotlight on what is happening in many churches today. It is written for everyone who has ever asked the following question, "Why do churches have problems?"

The scripture basis for exposing problems is as follows:
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.” (Ephesians 5:8-13).

    Introduction

    The purpose of this book is to be understood as a proactive resource for the clergy and associated leadership on how to avoid a storm from raging within a church.  Thus the format for this book is a comparison and contrast between the powers of the Holy Spirit vs. the spirit of humanity (the human spirit or the flesh). The following verses relate to this subject.

    For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.   (Galatians 5:17)

    For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.      (Romans 7:19)

    9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Colossians 3:9-10)

    For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  (2 Timothy 1:7)

    19 This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.(John 3:19-21)

    Therefore, we understand that lives can be destroyed when evil activities do not see the light of day. Why do these evil activities occur? Because, we live in a fallen world which is flawed. So then by extension, we must acknowledge that the practice of religion is flawed because this world and humanity are flawed. But even within this flawed and fallen world, we see that such is the way of life and death and there will be trouble;

    Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble. (Job 14:1)

    The Role of the Church

    For about 2000 years the role of the New Testament church has been to provide sanctuary. This sanctuary has been instituted so that those seeking refuge from the secular society have a place to find solace, are accepted and hear the Good News. People need to believe in something greater than themselves and find their faith in God.

    The need for people to find their faith in God is because many people believed that they were living in a world that was out of control. Beginning with the era of the New Testament and going forward in time, this world can be an undesirable and frightening place. The role of the church is to help the poor, make, disciples, baptize people, instruct and impact the world with the Great Commission. Some people feel that a church is just the building or physical structure: I do not. I feel that the 'people really comprise the church'. On one hand, a physical building provides us with a central place to meet for worship and fellowship. That has its value and is important. On the other hand, I know of many a church that didn't have a building (for several years) and still thrived and functioned as a church (a unified body of believers).

    Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:3-10)
