A Joyous Journey - Sallee Bonham

A Joyous Journey: Devotions from the Book of Psalms

A Joyous Journey: Devotional Readings from the Book of Psalms

    Devotional Readings 1-10

The Lord kept speaking three words to me during my meditation time,Write for me. So I started writing and this is the fruit of my labor for the LORD.

Living a victorious, joy-filled life through faith in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

    Psalm 2:7 I Am God's Daughter

I will declare the decree: the LORD has said to me, You are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

Jesus is God's Son and through him, I am God's daughter.  I am living for Him. I was claimed by God from the moment I was conceived.

Read the above paragraph and follow with the prayer below.

    Prayer

God in heaven, help me to believe that I am truly your daughter, claimed by you from the moment that I was conceived. Soften my heart and let this truth be engraved upon it – I am a daughter of God Almighty, holy and beloved. I ask this in the mighty name of your son, Jesus Christ who is my Lord and Savior. Amen.

    Psalm 3:1-4 Shield Me Lord

O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against

me! Many are saying of me, God will not deliver him. But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory

on me and lift up my head. To the LORD I cry aloud, and he

answers me from his holy hill.

Years ago, I saw a sign in the self-help section of a bible store that said, I try to live one day at a time, but lately I feel like several days have attacked me at once. Just thinking about this sign has helped me to laugh on a stressful day.

Today, I also have the Lord to rely on when I am feeling as if several days have attacked me at once. When I feel surrounded by troubles and people who don't care, the Lord always cares about me. He causes my perceived problems to fall away from me. God's solutions occur in ways that I do not, and would not think of. That is how I know He answers my prayer.

    Prayer

Lord, I am feeling surrounded by foes as I try and walk your path. Many say that you will not help me, or deliver me from what I face today. But you are a shield around me LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. I cry aloud to you LORD and you answer me from your holy hill. Amen.

Psalm 4:4 Learning To Be Still

Stand in awe, and sin not:commune with your own heart on your bed, and be still.

Today, I am in awe of the Lord and trying my best to not sin. At days end, in bed, I search my heart, or review my

actions and behaviors of the day. Then, I am silent.

Being mentally silent was not an activity that I had even thought about until I was thirty-three years old and

participating in a twelve-step recovery program. People kept talking about meditating as part of their daily prayer

time. I remember thinking about this as an activity to be practiced, or an action that I needed to do so I created a

meditation wall in my tiny apartment.

The meditation wall consisted of a framed Serenity Prayer, a wall hanging of Proverbs 3:6, and other sayings such as: First Things First and One Day at a Time. Each day I would sit on the couch and read my meditation wall. Then I would think about what each one said and what it meant.

One day, I realized that meditating wasn't me talking to myself. It was a time for me to be still, or silent. Wow!

I had not tried to be mentally silent in a VERY long time.

    Prayer

Father God, I am in awe of your unending patience with me. Help me at the end of each day, when I lay in bed examining my attitude and my actions of the day. Help me to be still so that I will hear your quiet voice speak to me. I ask these things in the mighty name of  your son, Jesus, who is Lord of my life. Amen.

Psalm 8:6-8 Jesus is NOT My Co-pilot

You made him to have dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet:. All sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

Jesus is the ruler over the work of  God's hands. Jesus is the ruler over mankind because mankind is the work of God's hands. Everything on Earth is lower than Jesus' feet. That puts all living things, including mankind, under Jesus' rule.

Contrary to a popular saying, Jesus is not my co-pilot. The word co-pilot makes me think that I am sharing some degree of control over my life with Jesus.  I do not.

Jesus is the Lord of my life. I gave my life to him and became a new creation under his Lordship. I was also given the indwelling Holy Spirit to help me follow Jesus' will for me, not my own will. My will gets me into trouble when I begin to think that Jesus is my co-pilot and we are sharing the journey of my life.

Jesus is my chauffeur. I am sitting in
