    The Genus Selenicereus

    Etymology

    Selenicereus comes from Greek and Latin roots. The ancient Greek word selēnē means moon or month. With a capital letter, Selene is a moon goddess.

    Kērós is a Greek noun meaning wax. The Latin adjective cereus has the same basic root as this Greek noun. It means waxen, wax-colored, or supple. As a noun, it means candle. Since certain cacti resemble candles, botanists place them in the genus Cereus.

    Putting these two elements together, the genus Selenicereus consists of plants that are more or less similar to the genus Cereus and that are somehow connected with the moon. The connection is the time when their flowers bloom. They bloom at night, and soon
