Descrizione

The purpose of this manual is to give to the designer the tools to simulate the behavior of a twin-tube shock absorber on the computer. The designer will thus have the opportunity to size the damping characteristic of the shock absorber before practical realization in the laboratory of a working sample. He will also have the opportunity to evaluate in advance the accelerations produced by the attachments to the vehicle and the suspension system, this is very important as it is directly related to the noise perceived inside the passenger compartment. This publication is also dedicated at those who are interested in understanding the fluid dynamic functioning of the shock absorber.

Twin-tube shock absorber computer simulation for automotive - Andrea Faussone

1.0 Purpose

The purpose of this manual is to give to the designer the tools to simulate the behavior of a twin-tube shock absorber on the computer. The designer will thus have the opportunity to size the damping characteristic of the shock absorber before practical realization in the laboratory of a working sample. He will also have the opportunity to evaluate in advance the accelerations produced by the attachments to the vehicle and the suspension system, this is very important as it is directly related to the noise perceived inside the passenger compartment.

This publication is also dedicated at those who are interested in understanding the fluid dynamic functioning of the shock absorber.

3.0 Importance of computer numerical simulation

Many designers still prefer a more empirical approach, producing samples in the laboratory and mounting them directly on the test vehicle and verifying vehicle handling or noise; following the tests performed, they make changes to the components of the test samples to proceed with other tests. This type of approach, while flawless, requires an enormous amount of time for the realization of the samples and the subsequent test on the road or in the laboratory. The computational method allows to discard in advance th ose solutions that are obviously unsuitable, and to verify only the samples that have the greatest probability of success.

It should be noted that the proposed simulation process will not provide exact results, but it will be useful to obtain qualitative results and to indicate trends in the behavior of the changes compared to the original setting.

The methodology used for the simulation is the Bond-Graph technique. This technique allows to model in a unified and joint way quantities belonging to any domain of physics, such as mechanics and hydraulics, both present in the shock absorber.

3.1 An example: the noise

The acceleration of the shock absorber is directly related to the knocking noise. For this reason, in order to decide whether to build a prototype of a certain modification or not, the acceleration graphs that the simulation program gives for each modification are compared with those given for the original setting. If the accelerations of the modification are better, this could be an improvement, and prototypes will be built for bench and simulator tests. The F-V curves of the modifications and the original setting are also derived by simulation, in order to check that they do not differ too much. The results
