Niels GADE (1817-1890)

iels Gade composed a collection of ten Op 19 in 1852, following them up almost 30 years later: There is a Schumannesque quality to the harmonies and textures of this passionate Elegie. It should float along, the RH dancing over the lilting LH accompaniment. Don’t forget to take note of the staccato notes in the melody, as they will add colour and character to the melody. Keep the wrist relaxed when you play the repeated chords in the LH (bars 13-15), or the hand might tense up. Enjoy the ritenuto at bar 27 – the climax of the piece. Tail off calmy towards the end, allowing for another ritenuto (don’t slow down too much) in the final two bars. : See suggestions on the score.
