ELIAN HUNG OVER THE edge, seasick, as small waves rocked the canoe. 

Breathe, Eli.  His mother rubbed his back with a firm hand.  We are almost there.

Elian sat up and wiped his face with the cloth his mother handed him, thankful for the darkness that concealed his weak stomach from the other boats.  It was bad enough to vomit every few minutes in front of his own family who shared the canoe.  His sister glanced over at him, compassion on her face, but said nothing.  She knew him well enough not to draw attention to his embarrassment.  He silently thanked her for that.  Their father stared outward, oblivious to everything but the dark sea and the moving shadows of the canoes around them.

This was all that was left of them now, the once-great Ancients – a handful of families in canoes, drifting outward in thin moonlight with the dark abyss of the Sea of Aram gaping beneath them like a mouth poised to swallow.  What were they doing out here, in the middle of nothing, huddled in canoes like living driftwood?  What had happened to their people?

Elian glanced at his sister again, noticing this time how hunched her shoulders were, how she clenched her jaw.  She was anxious.  It was her vision which had sent them all here, her vivid description of an island palace rising upward from the sea, calling the Ancients to new glory.  She was
