Six Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Their Home Insurance - Scott Wenclewicz
Six things every homeowner
should know about their home insurance
By Scott Wenclewicz
2017 Edition
Chapter 1
Introduction
My name is Scott Wenclewicz, and I have been a licensed independent insurance agent for nearly eleven years. I wrote this book to help educate consumers about what I think the six primary topics are they should know about their homeowners insurance. The goal of this book is for people to actually read it and learn from it, so I intentionally kept the information brief and high level. It is my hope that it won’t take more than one to two hours to read. But just because the book is short in length does not mean it’s short in quality. I hope you find that the information I provide is informative and will spark conversation between you and your agent.
I tried to present an unbiased opinion throughout the book, but you will likely still be able to tell that I highly recommend consumers work with an independent agent and their staff. A very good independent agent, backed by a strong agency/team, will in my opinion be the best solution more times than not.
I'm not writing this book to bust up a relationship that you have with your current agent, or to make you question everything he or she does, but I definitely want to make you aware of areas where
your insurance situation could be improved. A lot of people do not put much thought into their homeowners insurance coverage. Price is typically the only thing people focus on, and that is unfortunate because a home is often the most valuable asset they own. So it’s really a necessity that you are properly informed on the purchases you make to protect that asset.
I'm very confident that after reading this book you'll be well-informed about what areas of your insurance you need to dive into. Please don't just read the book and put it down. Take some action. If you're buying a new home, make sure you're asking questions about the topics I address. Make sure you're aware of and understand everything you’re buying. If you already own a home, make sure you look up your most recent renewal and do some digging into what all you are covered for and that you have the proper coverage. As I mention in one section, there are a lot of changes that may need to be made to your existing policy. Enjoy the book, and be ready to look at your insurance from a whole new perspective.
Chapter 2
Who this book is for
This book is intended for a few key audiences. First, any homeowner or potential homeowner. I think this book will open your eyes. Sure, some of the things may be rather obvious, but I think you’ll be surprised by what you learn. I intentionally made this a short, quick read so that people will actually take the time to read it and learn from it. Your home, for most people, is going to be the biggest investment you ever make. Yet the piece of paper or the policy that protects your biggest investment is often neglected or simply not paid attention to. This is likely the case at sign up, and I bet it's even more the case upon renewal. A lot of people don't even know who they have their homeowners insurance with.
A second audience is professionals who help assist clients who are currently homeowners or are going to be homeowners in the near future. This could be realtors, mortgage lenders or financial advisors. This is really a great book for them to not only learn a little bit more themselves, but to also be able to educate and help their clients as well. I’ve noticed that over the past ten years an increasing number of these professionals stay out of the homeowners insurance arena in terms of giving advice. What I’ve discovered is that many don’t feel informed enough to make
recommendations because they don’t work with a trusted insurance expert to help educate them.
This book is also great for current clients of Wenclewicz Insurance. While our current clients don't necessarily have to read this book because they know they're in good
