Introduction
What does the average adult eat? The answer is not enough fruits or vegetables and way too many calories. The average adult eats well over 2000 calories a day and has a BMI of 25 or higher. This BMI alone places more than half the population of the United States in the category of overweight, obese, or morbidly obese (Woolston, ND).
Individuals should be getting at least five recommended servings of fruits and vegetables a day (Woolston, ND). Your calorie intake should hit in the 1800 range for women and the 2200 range for men (Brazier, 2018). How many calories you actually need depends on your specific age and how active you are. Individuals who live a more active lifestyle should consume more calories as they are what provide your body with energy. An active lifestyle will result in more energy production (Brazier, 2018). Your body mass index (BMI) should be around 21 for men and 18 for women (Woolston, ND). While it is easy to understand how unhealthy fats clog your arteries, how simple carbohydrates spike glucose levels, and why processed foods hinder immune system function, you can only imagine how it is impacting your internal system.
