Paul wrote his epistle to Philippians while imprisoned in Rome. The Apostle Paul spent a total of approximately seven years in prison and wrote the epistle to Philippians about 61 A.D., while under house arrest.

While it’s not known exactly when Paul was in prison, an estimate can be made from the scriptures.

    Paul was arrested in Jerusalem – [58 A.D., Acts 21:27 - 22:30].

    Imprisoned in Caesarea for two years – [58 - 60 A.D. ; Acts 23:23 - 26:32].

    Paul was shipwrecked on way to Rome – [60 A.D., Acts 27:1 - 28:16].

    His first imprisonment in Rome – [61 - 63 A.D., Acts 28:16-31].

Paul was released from Roman prison in 63 A.D.

    Paul was writing 2 Timothy from a Maritime dungeon – [68 A.D., 2Tim 4:6-8].

    Also 2nd Roman imprisonment, trial and execution [68 A.D., 2Tim 4:6-8].

Paul had learned the secret of contentment and revealed it to the Philippians. Paul wrote this epistle to the Philippians to thank some dear friends for sending him money.

Paul tells about an inner joy that only comes from Jesus Christ, regardless of external conditions. Paul begins by giving thanks to the Philippians, and after describing some problems he was facing in Rome, he discloses his uncertainty about his future, whether he would be released or executed. Paul then describes Christ's humility and urges the Philippians to imitate Christ. Paul digresses for a bit and warns the Philippians about relying on external qualifications for their faith. After a few personal comments, Paul closes by thanking the Philippians again for their generosity.
