    1 Four-Patches

    The first thirteen blocks are all four-patches based on squares and triangles—good beginner blocks. The last two block patterns in this chapter are a little harder, but by then you should be able to make them. Some of the pattern pieces are interchangeable within the finished block size. Decide whether you want to make finished 8″ × 8″ squares or 12″ × 12″ squares, and follow these cutting instructions for the pieces in each block.

    NOTE: The following pattern summary is used only in Chapter 1 as a tool for ease of constructing the blocks. Use your favorite method to make half-square triangle units and quarter-square triangle units, or cut out the triangles first and then stitch them together.

    8″ × 8″ Blocks

    A: Cut squares 2½″ × 2½″.

    B: Cut squares 2 ″ × 2 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    C: Cut squares 4 ″ × 4 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    D: Cut squares 5¼″ × 5¼″. Cut each in half diagonally twice, creating 4 triangles.

    E: Cut rectangles 2½″ × 4½″.

    F: Cut squares 6 ″ × 6 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    G: Cut squares 2 ″ × 2 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    H: Cut squares 3½″ × 3½″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    12″ × 12″ Blocks

    A: Cut squares 3½″ × 3½″.

    B: Cut squares 3 ″ × 3 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    C: Cut squares 6 ″ × 6 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    D: Cut squares 7¼″ × 7¼″. Cut each in half diagonally twice, creating 4 triangles.

    E: Cut rectangles 3½″ × 6½″.

    F: Cut squares 9 ″ × 9 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    G: Cut squares 2 ″ × 2 ″. Cut each in half diagonally, creating 2 triangles.

    The White House during the War

    White House recalls Washington City, the Union capital perched on the edge of the Confederacy. During the War’s first weeks, Washingtonians chose sides. Virginian Elizabeth Lindsay Lomax, who lived near the White House, gave a vivid account of the week the War began. Her youngest son, U.S. Army officer Lindsay Lomax, was a graduate of West Point. He and friend Jeb Magruder spent time at Elizabeth’s house that week.

    April 16, 1861

    Rained all night. Reported again last evening that Virginia has seceded, but it is not believed.

    April 18

    Virginia has seceded!! Heaven help us.

    April 19

    Visitors all day long. Many people are leaving the city. Great excitement and unrest.

    April 21

    This has been a frightfully exciting day. Riots here and in Baltimore, many persons shot, also a heartrending day for Lindsay and for me.… This evening Lindsay told me that he had sent in his resignation; Colonel Magruder has also sent in his resignation from the army and will go to Virginia tomorrow where Lindsay will join him.

    The first paragraph of Lindsay’s letter:

    I cannot stand it any longer and feel it my duty to resign. My State is out of the Union and when she calls for my services I feel that I must go. I regret it very much, realizing that the whole thing is suicidal.

    The White House pattern is a variation of a mid-twentieth-century block, designed by the Chicago Tribune’s Nancy Cabot in 1937.

    Cutting

    Refer to pattern piece sizes for 8″ × 8″ or 12″ × 12″ finished blocks (pages 6–7) and the blocks for your shading preferences. Cut the following:

    A: 4 light, 4 medium, and 4 dark squares

    B: 2 light and 2 medium squares cut to make 4 triangles of each

    2 Star of the West

    Jessie Benton Frémont in the 1850s

    Star of the West symbolizes the first emancipation proclamation and mid-nineteenth-century power couple Jessie and John Frémont. In 1861 General Frémont was commander of the Union Army in Missouri, a state torn by conflicting loyalties. He declared martial law, warning that armed rebels would be court-martialed and shot, and their property confiscated. Their slaves are hereby declared freemen.

    Frémont’s emancipation proclamation displeased President Lincoln, who warned: Liberating slaves of traitorous owners will alarm our Southern Union friends and turn them against us. Frémont publicly refused to rescind his order, and Jessie went to Washington to argue their case. Her account:

    The President said, ‘You are quite a female politician.’ I felt the sneering tone and saw there was a foregone decision against all listening. Then the President spoke more rapidly and unrestrainedly: ‘The General ought not to have done it.… The General should never have dragged the Negro into the war. It is a war for a great national object and the Negro has nothing to do with it.’

    Lincoln’s recollection:

    She sought an audience with me at midnight and taxed me so violently with many things that I had to exercise all the awkward tact I have to avoid quarreling with her.

    Jessie was out of place, a wife deputized to discuss policy. The meeting went badly, and so did Frémont’s subsequent career. Lincoln removed him from the Missouri command. The War remained an official fight for the Union, not a fight against slavery—for the time being.

    Star of the West is an old block also called Clay’s Choice, a tribute to earlier politician Henry Clay, according to Ruth Finley in her 1929 book, Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them.

    Cutting

    Refer to pattern piece sizes for 8″ × 8″ or 12″ × 12″ finished blocks (pages 6–7) and the blocks for your shading preferences. Cut the following:

    A: 8 light squares

    B: 2 light, 4 medium, and 2 dark squares cut to make 4 light, 8 medium, and 4 dark triangles
