He has been featured in varied media as an expert in mental health and psycho-trauma recovery, including CNN, GMA7, ABS CBN, TV5, and UNTV. A former professor, newspaper journalist, and minister, he is author of other books, “Secrets of Your Self” and “God’s Inner Healing,” among others. INTRODUCTION

Coronavirus is a traumatic event.

It’s not just personal trauma. But, also very much a global trauma and crisis.

Trauma is wound. It’s a sudden, intense emotional or physical (or both) event or series of events that harms a person experiencing it.

Webster’s Dictionary defines trauma as a painful emotional experience or shock, often producing a lasting psychic effect.

We all have had traumatic experiences. We can recognize the feeling of being traumatized or stressed by circumstances.

Especially with a high-stress, trauma-filled event such as the Coronavirus pandemic.

Can you overcome the trauma?

Well, the answer is yes.

But first, you need to make a differentiation between traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The two should not be confused.

TRAUMATIC STRESS

Traumatic stress can be good to our well being.

It’s what can motivate us to stretch and grow ourselves - physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, materially, and spiritually.

Coronavirus does take an emotional toll and cause traumatic stress.

It’s normal to feel intense shock, confusion, and fear. You may feel numb or overwhelmed by a host of conflicting emotions, sometimes all at once.

The emotional and physical effects of the Coronavirus trauma may not be limited to those who directly experience them.

It does happen that people also experience high traumatic stress due to daily news and social media coverage - horrific images of tragedy, suffering, and loss of lives from Coronavirus anywhere in the world.

Symptoms of traumatic stress especially at an early stage may include: shock, sadness or grief, fear, anxiety, irritability of moods, sleeplessness, rapid breathing, racing thoughts, trembling, among others.

Yet often, as time goes by, the disturbing thoughts and emotions of traumatic stress—as well as any physical symptoms—start to adapt and even fade gradually.

As unpleasant as the symptoms of traumatic stress can be, they tend to gradually improve over time.

This is especially so if you take steps to care for your emotional health in overcoming the trauma.

POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), on the other hand, is completely different.

The symptoms of traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) look very similar. This is especially so immediately following a disaster or catastrophe.

But they progress very differently.

In PTSD, you remain in worsening, open-ended psychological and emotional shock.

Your normal traumatic stress symptoms don’t decrease or ease up. They become prolonged in duration.

The nervous system gets stuck. This causes one to be unable to move on from a traumatic event or series of events.

Helplessness is a common symptom of prolonged suffering from the effects of trauma.

The sudden, continuing losses in life because of Coronavirus can leave many feeling helpless, depressed, and vulnerable.

Some people have manifestation of lingering anger. They may get angry at God, government, or others. Or, they could easily be prone to emotional outbursts, even violence.

Many times, those with PTSD have flare-ups. They’re usually in the form of uncontrollable thoughts, flashbacks, and avoidance of certain situations, or causing bad dreams and nightmares.

In PTSD, rather than improving or adapting and being healed, your traumatic stress experience erupts again and again, disturbing every part of your life. Life feels like hell!

There are specific things you can do to help yourself and your loved ones cope with the psychological aftermath of trauma.

When you are not able to help your self or seek outside intervention, PTSD can lead to serious life-damaging consequences, including illness and death.

The fact that you have taken the trouble to read this book tells me that you may be experiencing traumatic stress.

Or, even suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

You have made a helpful, responsible choice!

You are largely responsible for how much traumatized or stressed you are. In reality, what you do and achieve in overcoming the trauma is your choice.

By the time you have worked through this book, you will understand more deeply the circumstances around the Coronavirus trauma and how to deal with them.

INSIDE THE TRAUMA

LESSON: Trauma is essentially an internal state.

Violent attacks, tragic accidents, natural disasters, wars, sexual and emotional abuse, and dozens of other such events show that the external world is not always controllable, regardless of our knowledge and resources. These painful challenges can suddenly shift the apparent arena of control from the external to the internal world.

I’m afraid to go out, can’t control my panic and perspiration. Am I going crazy, doc?, asked Wilma, a mother of two little kids asked during our online Skype session.

Wilma is in a state of trauma caused by the personal effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The virus has been infecting millions and killed hundreds of thousands of people in more than 200 countries, and still continuing.

Since Coronavirus inflicts bodily disease and death, it creates a simultaneous painful emotional shock in individuals.

The rapid and massive spread of the virus as well as its high infectiousness among people, communities, and nations is very destructive.

Such event has produced sudden simultaneous and painful losses - physical (health) psychological/emotional, economic (employment, business), social, travel (mobility), and spiritual.

The serious impact of this pandemic trauma has caused changes in personality, create phobias, nightmares, unusual fears, compulsions, depression, panic anxiety, abnormal behaviors, among others.

There are a thousand ways to act crazy. And trauma, such as this pandemic, can cause them all.

Of course, there are other complications that can aggravate it, like pre-existing physical and mental disorders.

In all the decades of my life, I’ve never experienced a global lockdown. Until now.

I never expected or saw it coming. This Covid-19. Then, boom!

I remember, the first day of the lockdown, I was just staring at a white wall. I felt I’m not my usual self.  Paralyzed, it was as if I got hostaged by an invisible force.

Thankfully, just in time, I clicked out of my mental daze and allowed the Covid-19 reality to finally start sinking in.

Remember, every human being amid Coronavirus is potentially a trauma victim - either symptomatic or asymptomatic carrier.

Since trauma is essentially an internal state, part of treatment and prevention is to do whatever is necessary to avoid complications.

Familiarity with the nature and dynamic of trauma is a vital first step.

Knowing what trauma is and learning the principles of recovery will make it easier to deal with it.

EMOTIONAL SHOCK

LESSON: Emotional shock is preventable and curable.

Every Covid-19 patient is potentially a patient in shock, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic.

Shock is either physical or emotional. Ordinarily, they go together.

Physical shock if you have Covid-19 can take the form of weakness, dizziness, nausea, and nervous shivers on top of the virus’ main symptoms.

A sudden loss of adequate breathing or mobility because of the virus can cause a variety of physical symptoms, including from pre-existing illnesses.

Familiarity with the principles of physical shock makes it easier to understand the principles of emotional shock.

In a sense, when you go into physical to emotional shock, you’re going from the known to unknown. Or, at least from the familiar to unfamiliar.

Nerrie had no obvious Covid symptoms when she went into our online therapy session over FaceTime.

During our fifth session, she began to sporadically experience difficulty in breathing. She got nervous that she broke a vase in anger.

She was tested positive of Covid-19 later. And she messaged it to me via FaceTime immediately after.

Coronavirus is a physically and emotionally painful event.

Every serious physical bodily pain usually creates a simultaneous emotional shock.

And every painful emotional shock  is a psychological wound that causes subconscious scar.

One common characteristic of emotional shock is loss of common sense and reasonable perspective.

That’s a reason why shock can cause changes in personality, create compulsions, addictions, rage, phobias, etc.

There are thousands of ways to go crazy. And emotional shock can cause all of them.

Emotional shock is preventable and curable.

Practicing common sense and intuition aid this. It’s preventable and curable by psychotherapy as well as by spirituality.

SEEING REALITY AS IT IS

LESSON: Reality provides the basis for whether to sustain or dissolve hope.

Thomas Eliot once observed, Humankind cannot bear very much reality.

How damaging and aversive to our well being when reality is denied, masked, or downplayed.

During the early weeks of the Coronavirus outbreak trauma, its reality was not easy to discern.

Many individuals, communities, and even heads of state ignored or diminished its impact.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been on the hot seat since the virus struck the world.

The U.S. saw its first documented death from the novel coronavirus Feb. 29, 2020.
