      Aletta, sweetheart, come in here.

      Instantly I stop what I am doing and walk into my mother’s bedroom, she is sitting at her dresser, the one with the mirror and all the fancy bottles.

      She looks glamourous, like a model, but she always looks like that.

      Yes mommy?

      Now that you are ten, I need to explain some things to you. She looks serious but I hardly ever see her smile, I thought all mommies looked like that until I was allowed to go to Maggie’s house. Her mommy smiled all the time and was really nice, she baked us cookies.

      Okay, I want to sit down too but there is no other chair and she will get mad if I sit on the floor. She tells me off all the time for not being a lady but I was allowed to sit on the ground at Maggie’s house, we even got to eat cookies on the ground while we played.

      I haven’t been allowed to go back yet but mommy said I would be able to go back soon.

      In life there are two types of women, whores and wives. You see, they are almost exactly the same, except one is treated better than the other. The whore is used and fucked then tossed aside but the wife, the wife is different, because after she is used and fucked, she is given things. Houses, cars, diamonds, things of value, things of status, do you understand so far dear?

      I don’t think I do understand but I don’t want her to get mad at me, if she gets mad then it makes my father get mad. He doesn’t like any hassles and I’ve become a hassle, or so I’ve been told, so I pretend to understand, Um, I think so mommy.

      Yes, very good dear. Do you want to know how to become a wife? Phew, it worked. I’m glad I pleased her; I would hate to disappoint her again. Last time she locked me in a cupboard and I didn’t like that, but her punishments are still better than my father’s.

      I nod my head eagerly, this seems important, mommy said I should always pay attention to what she tells me. She says that when I get older and more beautiful, I will need her advice and I trust my mommy so I want to make her proud.

      It’s simple, you have to fuck like a whore but look and act like a wife. Do you want me to show you how to look like a wife?

      I’m not really sure what fuck means, or whore, but I do know what wife means, my mommy is my fathers’ wife and I would like to be like her one day so I agree, Um, okay.

      First, make-up, you must always wear make-up, even when you first wake up in the morning you must look gorgeous. A whore only needs to look good naked but a wife needs to look good on her husbands’ arm, does that make sense?

      I think so? I’m not so sure I’m following mommy anymore but she gets mad when I don’t pay attention, I don’t like making her mad, it’s not often she is happy like she is today.

      I don’t want to make her mad, so I’m going to pretend.

      Good. Now, come here and I will give you your first make-up lesson, once you have mastered your face, we will start to work on your hair and then style.

      Nodding, I spend the rest of the afternoon trying to remember as much as I can, I’m going to make my mommy proud.

      Aletta!

      I hear my father’s voice bellow down the corridor and echo around my room, his voice terrifies me.

      The last thing I want to do is leave the sanctuary of my bedroom but I have to, if I don’t, he will get mad and hit me.

      Last week, I complained because this old man that worked with him was playing with my skirts, I told my father that I didn’t like him touching me and he twisted my arm so hard that he broke it.

      Of course, I had to tell all my friends at school that I fell out of a tree. My father said that everything that happens inside this house is a secret, if I tell our family secrets to anyone then I will be punished. I don’t like being punished.

      Looking down at my bright pink cast, I high tail it out of my room and towards my parent’s bedroom.
