There are specific nutrients that your baby needs for healthy growth, and this book contains recipes to include them.
Protein helps your body utilize all the other essential nutrients, so get plenty of it.
Folic Acid, or Vitamin B9, is essential in developing the baby’s nervous system. You should consume 400 micrograms each day. The best foods are green vegetables, cantaloupe, asparagus, avocados and citrus fruits.
Iron is needed for healthy blood development. You should be getting 27 mg each day. Foods rich in iron are lean meats, spinach, chickpeas and beans. Vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron better.
Calcium builds strong bones and teeth. Foods rich in calcium are eggs, yogurt, cheese, broccoli and sweet potatoes.
Vitamin D works with calcium to develop strong bones and teeth. Foods rich in Vitamin D are eggs, yogurt, sardines, and shiitake mushrooms. Pregnant women need up to 2000 IU (International Units) of Vitamin D each day.
Omega-3 fatty acids help your baby’s brain go. You may be carrying a Rhodes scholar! You should be getting 200 mg a day. Eat lots of red lentils, spinach, wild rice, and salmon. Be careful with swordfish. It does contain omega-3 fatty acids, but it also has a high mercury content.
